Overview

The Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk is a registered association (eingetragener Verein) that has worked for more than 50 years for the rights of children in Germany. Its stated vision is a child-friendly society in which children represent their own interests, and its work focuses on overcoming child poverty and on the participation of children and young people in all matters affecting them. It was founded on 17 February 1972 in Munich with the aim of improving playground conditions, and the donation box (Spendendose) placed in shops became its symbol. After German reunification it merged in 1990 with the Kinderhilfswerk of the DDR and moved to Berlin. It describes itself as a non-profit donation association that works transparently and handles donated funds carefully, and it holds several donation seals.

History

The Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk was founded on 17 February 1972 in Munich. The association's initial aim was to improve the playground situation, and the idea arose of asking people for support: the donation box entered shops and became its symbol. The 1989 adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and its ratification in Germany in 1992 marked a turning point, making children's rights the heart of its work; it profiled itself as a children's policy association and became one of the most important contacts for child participation in Germany. After reunification, in 1990 it merged with the Kinderhilfswerk of the DDR and moved to Berlin. In 1993 the Kindernothilfefonds was founded to help children affected by poverty and their families individually, quickly and unbureaucratically; this individual case assistance continues to support around 2,000 children and their families each year. At the end of the 1990s, with the arrival of the internet, its fields of work expanded.
