History

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe states that it has been helping worldwide for more than 70 years. It describes itself as engaging for people who fall into existential need through a catastrophe, regardless of religion, ethnic affiliation, political conviction or nationality, and as focusing especially on those particularly dependent on support: refugees, the elderly, children, the sick and people with physical or mental impairments. It says it is active each year in around 75 aid projects, whether before, during or after a catastrophe. Its annual accounts derive from the audited financial statements of the Evangelisches Werk für Diakonie und Entwicklung e. V. (EWDE) and the Evangelische Zentralstelle für Entwicklungshilfe e. V. (EZE). In the 2025 reporting year, total income was 60.5 million euros, down from 68.6 million euros the previous year, essentially due to lower public funds; delays in the 2025 federal budget meant the Auswärtiges Amt (AA) and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) could approve hardly any new humanitarian projects in 2025. Donation income remained stable overall, with significant donation income arising among other things from the earthquake in Myanmar in spring, and the fourth winter of war in Ukraine brought an increase in earmarked donations for winter aid. A further focus was support for the population affected by the Sudan conflict. On 3 December 2021, the head of Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, Martin Keßler, was re-elected as a member of the newly elected board of ACT.
