Its headquarters are located in the Wichernhaus in Hagen and in Iserlohn.

History

Diakonie Mark-Ruhr was formed on 1 January 2011 through the merger of two regional diaconal organizations: the Diakonisches Werk Ennepe-Ruhr/Hagen, headquartered in Hagen, and the Diakonie Mark-Ruhr, headquartered in Iserlohn. This merger created a unified welfare organization serving a broad region in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Hagen, the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis, the Märkischer Kreis, and the cities of Schwerte and Fröndenberg-Frömern. The organization operates as the diaconal service of the Evangelical church districts of Hagen, Hattingen-Witten, Iserlohn, and Schwelm. It is a member of the Diakonie Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe e.V., the umbrella organization for diaconal work in the Rhineland, Westphalia, and Lippe regions. Structurally, Diakonie Mark-Ruhr is a corporate group with a holding structure, organizing its specialized departments into subsidiary and sub-subsidiary companies. Over the years, Diakonie Mark-Ruhr has expanded its services to include a wide range of social welfare offerings. It operates more than 100 facilities and services, including 14 retirement homes, 18 diaconal stations, counseling centers for the homeless, migration and refugee counseling, and a medical mobile unit for the homeless. In December 2010, the Arztmobil was introduced as an additional low-threshold medical service for homeless individuals, supported by volunteer doctors and nursing staff, as well as medical students from the University of Witten-Herdecke. In June 2018, the organization opened a new counseling center in Hagen on Körnerstraße, offering care and cancer counseling as well as an outpatient hospice service. The organization also runs Luthers Waschsalon in Hagen, a meeting point for homeless and low-income individuals, and the Bahnhofsmission. Through the Friederike-Fliedner-Berufskolleg in Iserlohn, it offers a Bachelor's degree program in Social Work for graduates of the technical school for social pedagogy. Today, Diakonie Mark-Ruhr employs approximately 3,300 people and remains a key social welfare provider and employer in the region, continuing its mission of providing help and support to people in need.
