Overview

Die Papierindustrie (stylized DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE) is the economic and social-policy apex association of the German pulp and paper industry. Headquartered in Berlin, with branch offices in Bonn, Gernsbach, and Brussels, it is a registered association (eingetragener Verein) and a member of the Federation of German Industries (BDI). The association represents the political interests of the industry at the national level and is actively involved in European lobbying as a member of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). Internationally, it represents the German pulp and paper industry in the International Council of Forest & Paper Associations (ICFPA). It is also a member of the association of energy-intensive industries in Germany. The association in its current form was established in July 2021 through the renaming of the Verband Deutscher Papierfabriken e.V. (VDP), whose first predecessor was founded in 1872, making it one of the oldest industrial associations in Germany. It brings together 104 companies and seven regional associations. According to its own statements, it represents over 95 percent of the production and turnover of the sector and sees itself as the spokesperson and interest representative of the largest national paper industry in Europe. On 1 January 2022, the association merged with the Vereinigung der Arbeitgeberverbände der Deutschen Papierindustrie (VAP), forming a unified association under the name Die Papierindustrie. As a trade association, Die Papierindustrie does not sell products but provides services to its members, including political advocacy, economic and social policy representation, and networking. It serves as the voice of the German paper industry both domestically and internationally, promoting the industry's interests in energy policy, environmental regulation, and trade matters. Its long history and broad membership base make it a central institution in the German industrial landscape.

History

The association's origins date back to 1872, when its first predecessor was founded, making it one of the oldest industrial associations in Germany. Over the decades, it evolved into the Verband Deutscher Papierfabriken e.V. (VDP), which served as the economic policy association for the German paper industry. In July 2021, the association was renamed Die Papierindustrie, reflecting a broader unification. On 1 January 2022, it merged with the Vereinigung der Arbeitgeberverbände der Deutschen Papierindustrie (VAP), the employers' association, to form a single unified association under the name Die Papierindustrie. This merger created a comprehensive organization representing both economic and social policy interests of the industry. Today, it has 104 member companies and seven regional associations, and it represents over 95% of the sector's production and turnover. It is headquartered in Berlin with offices in Bonn, Gernsbach, and Brussels, and is a member of the BDI, CEPI, and ICFPA.
