Overview
Die Stiftung Dolomiten UNESCO was founded on 13 May 2010 by the provinces of Belluno, Bozen, Pordenone, Trento and Udine and the regions Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto, after they committed to UNESCO to ensure efficient and coordinated management of the Dolomites World Heritage site. The foundation serves as a single point of contact for both the Environment Ministry and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and its task is to promote communication and cooperation among the territorial bodies that administer and manage the area defined by UNESCO as World Heritage, each according to its own regulations. Administrative and management powers remain with the provinces and regions under applicable legislation, while the foundation plays a fundamental role in coordinating the harmonization of management policies for the Dolomites asset, with the aim of developing a common strategy referred to as the 'Common Management Strategy'.
History
On 13 May 2010, the involved provinces and regions (the provinces of Belluno, Bozen, Pordenone, Trento and Udine and the two regions Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto) founded the foundation Dolomiti – Dolomiten – Dolomites – Dolomitis UNESCO, after committing to UNESCO to ensure efficient and coordinated management of the Dolomites World Heritage site. The foundation, which serves as a single point of contact for both the Environment Ministry and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, has the task of promoting communication and cooperation among the territorial bodies that administer and manage the area defined by UNESCO as World Heritage, each according to its own regulations. Administrative and management powers therefore remain with the provinces and regions under applicable legislation, while the foundation plays a fundamental role in coordinating the harmonization of management policies for the Dolomites asset, with the aim of developing a common strategy referred to as the 'Common Management Strategy'. This is a major challenge for the foundation given the complexity of the Dolomites asset — considering its linguistic and cultural as well as administrative diversity — which is not found in other World Heritage sites. For this reason the foundation can claim to be a completely new institution created specifically to promote the sustainable development of an area that is also historically extremely diverse.
