History
Diesel Music was founded in 1989 in Sweden by Johan Ekelund, Mauro Scocco and Torbjörn Sten. The label emerged during a vibrant period for Swedish popular music and quickly established itself as an independent force. Its early releases included records by Ratata, the band associated with Mauro Scocco, and it went on to release albums by a wide range of artists such as Lisa Nilsson, Titiyo, Blacknuss, Eagle-Eye Cherry, KOOP, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Krister Linder (Solaroid), Magnum Coltrane Price, Jeanette Lindström, Anna Järvinen, Martin Hederos, Georg Riedel and Nina Rochelle. This roster spanned pop, soul, jazz and electronic music, reflecting the label's eclectic A&R approach. In 2006, the founders sold Diesel Music to Playground Music Scandinavia, the largest Nordic independent label group, founded in 1999. Following the acquisition, Diesel Music continued as a label imprint within the Playground Music group, which operates offices in Malmö, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki, Tampere and Tallinn. Playground Music provides A&R, marketing, digital development and publishing services, and represents a large number of foreign record labels as well as distributing digitally and physically for Nordic companies. The group is the sole YouTube Certified record company in the Nordic region and is active in IMPALA and WIN, having signed the Fair Digital Deal Declaration. Diesel Music's catalog remains part of this broader independent music ecosystem.
