Overview
Dikker & Thijs is a historic Amsterdam brand that began in 1895 as a delicacies and wine shop founded by Fredrik Wilhelm Dikker. Henri Thijs became a partner in 1915, and the business became famous for oysters, lobsters, and caviar at its Prinsengracht location. Today it operates as the Dikker & Thijs Hotel, a classic boutique style hotel with 42 rooms, located along the Prinsengracht Canal in the heart of Amsterdam.
History
Dikker & Thijs began in 1895 when Fredrik Wilhelm Dikker founded the first Dikker & Co shop in Amsterdam, which soon gained notoriety in the Netherlands for its high quality. In 1915, Henri Thijs became a partner after serving as assistant to the famous French chef Auguste Escoffier. They opened their first shop in the Kalverstraat. In 1921, the business moved to the current majestic building on the corner of the Prinsengracht and Leidsestraat, where it became famous for selling oysters, lobsters, and caviar. The present owners took over in 1995, exactly 100 years after Dikker & Thijs took over the business of J.C. van Laar in the Kalverstraat in 1895. In 2021, the Dikker & Thijs Hotel was completely refurbished as a classic boutique style hotel. The hotel is set in an 18th-century warehouse and a 20th-century main building, with 42 rooms.
