Overview

Discomoda is a Venezuelan record label established in 1948 by César Roldán. It is described by the company as one of the earliest record labels of Venezuela and the oldest family-operated record label in the country. The label began as El Disco de Moda C.A., initially an importer and distributor of records, and grew into one of the most complete and important industrial emporiums in Latin America. Discomoda has released music by many of Venezuela's best-known artists and maintains one of the most complete folkloric and popular music catalogues of Venezuela. Its catalogue includes genres such as salsa, guaracha, and other Latin popular styles, with artists such as Billo's Caracas Boys, Nelson y Sus Estrellas, Los Satelites, Ray Perez, Los Terricolas, Alberto Beltrán, Daniel Santos, Bienvenido Granda, and Alci Sánchez. The label continues to operate as a family business and sells vinyl records, CDs, and digital streams through its official website.

History

Discomoda was founded in 1948 by César Roldán, born on February 6, 1927, in Múcura, Bolivar State, Venezuela. Roldán studied at the Escuela Técnica Industrial de San Martín, where he received an education in industry and business. Shortly after marrying Elena de Roldán, the couple started a business selling records and trinkets throughout Caracas. Elena recalled, "[when my husband decided to] start his own business; we decided to take on all the risk it implied together, and I was always willing to help him." Roldán acquired first a motorcycle and later a delivery van, traveling around Caracas with his wife as his assistant. Over time, he began negotiations with foreign firms, directly importing products from Mexico, the United States, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Colombia. El Disco de Moda, C.A. was formally established and registered as a distributor on March 30, 1955. The original Discomoda logo was designed by Rodrigo Soto Restrepo, an illustrator and photographer for the company. What began as an importer and distributor of records later became one of the most complete and important industrial emporiums in Latin America. Since 1948, Discomoda has provided many of Venezuela's best-known artists to the international stage and is home to one of the most complete folkloric and popular music catalogues of Venezuela. The label remains family-operated and continues to release and sell music through its official website.
