Overview
Discovery Science France was the French-market edition of Discovery Science, a subscription television brand devoted to popular science and factual entertainment. Its schedule drew from the wider Discovery programming catalogue and concentrated on subjects such as space exploration, engineering, industrial processes, inventions, machines, technology and unusual scientific phenomena. Programming was generally acquired from the international Discovery portfolio, adapted for French audiences through dubbing or subtitles and distributed through pay-TV operators rather than as a free-to-air service. The French service belonged to the broader European Discovery Science network, whose origins can be traced to the launch of Discovery Sci-Trek in the United Kingdom in October 1998. The European channel subsequently expanded into additional markets and adopted the Discovery Science name in April 2003. In April 2008, the brand was shortened to Discovery Science. The French version should therefore be understood as a national distribution and programming service within a wider European channel operation, rather than as a wholly separate global television network. In France, Discovery Science was carried by subscription platforms including Numericable and, later, SFR. Discovery channels returned to Numericable on 24 January 2013. The service had also been distributed through Canal+, but Discovery Science and several other Discovery channels were removed from Canal+ in January 2017 after Altice reached an exclusivity agreement covering Discovery Networks and NBCUniversal content. Before that removal, the channels had recorded measurable audience shares in France, with the reference material reporting a 0.5% share in 2014 and 0.4% in 2016. The channel's editorial identity was built around accessible explanations rather than specialist academic broadcasting. Representative programmes included How It's Made, How Do They Do It?, Extreme Engineering, Building the Ultimate, Food Factory, Through the Wormhole, Universe, Race to Mars, Raging Planet, Rough Science and The Gadget Show. These programmes presented scientific concepts through demonstrations, industrial case studies, engineering challenges, historical investigation and documentary storytelling. The resulting positioning sat between a traditional documentary channel and a technology-oriented factual-entertainment service. Discovery Science France was ultimately discontinued as a standalone French channel. In February 2024, it was announced that TLC would replace Discovery Science in France from 26 February 2024. The change ended the French service's branded television presence, although Discovery Science continued to exist in several other European markets. The wider European channel also ceased broadcasting in Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East in January 2024, while remaining available in markets including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland, the Nordic region and the Netherlands.
History
Discovery Science France formed part of the European Discovery Science television operation. The network's direct predecessor was Discovery Sci-Trek, which launched in the United Kingdom on 1 October 1998 after Discovery had announced plans for several new digital channels associated with the Sky Digital platform. Although an American-style Discovery Science identity had initially been considered, the European service went to air under the Sci-Trek name. The channel expanded beyond the United Kingdom during the following years. On 1 April 2003 it adopted the Discovery Science Channel name, aligning the service more closely with Discovery's science-focused international branding. In April 2008, the name was shortened to Discovery Science. A one-hour timeshift version was also introduced in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2008, although that service was separate from the French-market distribution described here. The French service operated as a pay-TV channel distributed through subscription platforms. Discovery's factual catalogue was localized for France through translated presentation, subtitles and/or dubbing. The editorial mix covered space, astronomy, engineering, technology, manufacturing, inventions, natural phenomena and practical scientific explanation. Programmes such as How It's Made and How Do They Do It? examined familiar products and processes, while Extreme Engineering, Building the Ultimate and Race to Mars used large-scale projects and speculative challenges to make technical subjects accessible. Other titles, including Through the Wormhole, Universe, Rough Science and The Big Experiment, placed greater emphasis on cosmology, experimentation and scientific discovery. Distribution was an important part of the French channel's history. Discovery channels returned to Numericable in France on 24 January 2013. Discovery Science was subsequently affected by a carriage dispute and market realignment: in December 2016, Altice acquired an exclusivity agreement with NBCUniversal and Discovery Networks, and Discovery Science, Discovery Channel and Investigation Discovery were removed from Canal+ on 17 January 2017. The reference material records audience shares of 0.5% in 2014 and 0.4% in 2016 before the Canal+ removal, indicating that the Discovery channels had established a measurable but specialized position in the French pay-TV market. The wider European network experienced further contraction in the 2020s. Discovery Inc. closed the Russian service on 9 March 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Discovery Science and DTX also stopped broadcasting in Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East during January 2024, although the brand continued in selected European markets. In France, a separate replacement decision was announced in February 2024: TLC was scheduled to take Discovery Science's place from 26 February 2024. This change marked the end of Discovery Science France as an active standalone channel. The replacement reflected a portfolio shift toward another established Warner Bros. Discovery brand rather than the continuation of the French service under its original name.
