Overview
Dlouhy Fahrzeugbau is an Austrian family-owned company that builds and converts special-purpose vehicles, primarily for emergency services such as rescue organisations, fire brigades and other blue-light organisations. The business was founded in 1869 as a wheelwright's workshop (Wagnerei) in Vienna's 16th district and has remained in the Dlouhy family's ownership ever since. Today it operates as Dlouhy GmbH with two sites in Austria — Vienna and Tulln — and employs over 120 highly qualified staff. The company converts roughly 800 vehicles per year and generates annual revenue of around EUR 30 million, exporting its vehicles to many countries. Dlouhy's product range covers rescue service vehicles, fire service vehicles, healthcare and medical products, mobility and patient transport solutions, extreme and special-purpose vehicles, safety equipment, media and diagnostic systems, and infrastructure solutions. The company is known for its in-house design and engineering department, its own mould and prototype shop, and its own plastics division, which produces interior panelling for rescue vehicles. A signature product is the Dlouhy Tragsessel (carrying chair), first developed in carbon in 1990 and continuously refined since. The company also operates the Dlouhy Service House, offering a 360-degree service portfolio from individual consultation to maintenance and repair of special vehicles, medical products and equipment components. Manufacturing takes place at the company's plant in Tulln, where vehicles are built to individual customer requirements as complete, tailor-made solutions. Parts of the interior fittings, especially for rescue service vehicles, are produced in modular series using modern technology to offer an optimal price-performance ratio. Safety testing is carried out with the company's own static and dynamic test facilities in close cooperation with TÜV and Magna International. Dlouhy has received state recognition for good design and, in 1989, the state award with permission to bear the federal coat of arms. The company remains 100% family-owned, with Martin Dlouhy having led the business since the 1990s.
History
Dlouhy Fahrzeugbau was founded in 1869 as a wheelwright's workshop (Wagnerei) in Vienna's 16th district. Before 1900, it was taken over by Anton Dlouhy, the great-grandfather of the current company head, and has remained 100% in family ownership ever since. In the 1920s the company began producing its first wooden vehicle bodies, later moving to metal versions. In 1964 Karl Dlouhy, the current senior chief, took over leadership of the company. After establishing a new facility at Kuffnergasse/Eisnergasse in Vienna's 16th district — today's Vienna location — the company had already made a name for itself in rescue vehicle construction by 1970. In 1983 the company received state recognition for good design for the Puch G ambulance body, and in 1989 it received the state award with permission to bear the federal coat of arms. In 1990, in cooperation with customers, the first carbon carrying chair (Tragsessel) was developed, which — gradually refined and adapted — has maintained its successful market position to this day. In 1992 the current managing director Martin Dlouhy joined management and, in a continuous process, took over leadership from his father. A year later the property in Tulln was acquired and production began there. Since 1994 the company has also had its own plastics department, where interior panelling for rescue service vehicles is produced using its own equipment. In a first expansion phase in 1995, the foundation was laid in Tulln for today's manufacturing capabilities at the headquarters. The expansion continued in 1999/2000 with the construction of a warehouse and office complex, and in 2004/2005 with the construction of a new production hall. In 2006 the two locations Vienna and Tulln were merged into one company, now operating as Dlouhy GmbH with two business sites. In 2009/2010 the Tulln site was expanded with a new production and warehouse hall. Further new halls and a storage yard were put into operation in 2017 and 2021. The company's in-house design department develops new products and pre-plans the interiors of various vehicles. Its own mould and prototype shop enables both the development of new series products and their continuous optimisation and adaptation to new requirements. A large network of partners and suppliers ensures that new ideas are constantly being implemented. For safety, the company uses its own facilities for static and dynamic tests in close cooperation with TÜV and Magna International, feeding the experience and results into vehicle conversions to optimise safety. As a vehicle builder, the company specialises in extraordinary bodywork and complex interior design, allowing all vehicles to be built to individual customer requirements. Parts of the interior fittings, especially for rescue service vehicles, are produced in modular series using modern technology to offer an optimal price-performance ratio.
