Overview
Docks Vauban is a shopping and leisure centre located in Le Havre, in the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy, France. It occupies a historic dock-warehouse complex built between 1846 and 1884 between the Bassin Vauban and the Bassin Vatine, at the entrance to the city centre. These were the first docks of their kind in France, originally used to store goods in transit such as cotton, coffee and spices. The buildings survived the bombing of the Second World War and were later rehabilitated and transformed by the architecture firm Reichen et Robert, retaining their brick, slate and glass construction. Today the site operates as a commercial destination combining retail, dining and entertainment. It hosts boutiques for the whole family, a Lidl supermarket, restaurants, cafés and a Pathé cinema. The centre presents itself as Normandy's fashion and leisure destination, with around 60 shops, restaurants and a cinema open seven days a week. Its official website promotes its boutiques, news and events, including cultural programming such as the Festival Art Explora and seasonal activities. Ownership changed in 2021: on 1 August 2021, Wereldhave sold the centre to Lighthouse Capital Limited. The centre remains active and continues to host events, promotions and community activities, positioning itself as a regional shopping and leisure hub in Le Havre.
History
The Docks Vauban site originates from the dock-warehouse complex whose construction began in 1846 and continued in stages until 1884. Located between the Bassin Vauban and the Bassin Vatine at the entrance to Le Havre's city centre, these were the first docks of their kind in France. They served as warehouses for goods in transit, notably cotton, coffee and spices. The buildings withstood the bombing of the Second World War. In the late 20th century the warehouses were rehabilitated and transformed into a shopping and leisure centre by the architecture firm Reichen et Robert. The renovated complex retained its brick, slate and glass construction and now accommodates boutiques, a Lidl supermarket, restaurants, cafés and a Pathé cinema. Ownership of the centre changed on 1 August 2021, when Wereldhave sold it to Lighthouse Capital Limited. The centre continues to operate as a regional retail and leisure destination, hosting events such as the Festival Art Explora and various promotional and community activities.
