Overview

Domaine Jessiaume is a family-founded Burgundy wine estate based in Santenay, in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, France. Created in 1850 by the Jessiaume family, the domaine has participated in the region's winemaking history for generations and today produces wines from 15 different appellations. Its roughly 15 hectares of vines are spread across the communes of Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Auxey-Duresses, Santenay and Chassey-le-Camp, giving the estate a broad footprint across some of the Côte de Beaune's best-known village and Premier Cru terroirs. The estate's modern identity is closely tied to its emphasis on terroir and low-intervention winemaking. The domaine states that its wines are made with respect and as naturally as possible, without artifice, and that it seeks elegant, fine wines that express their sites. The portfolio includes white and red Burgundy, with Santenay blanc described as fine, balanced and refreshing, and red cuvées noted for crunchy red-fruit aromas, supple tannins and freshness. A Beaune Cents-Vignes bottling from the 2022 vintage is highlighted as a success for its power and balance. Ownership has changed hands in the modern era. Between 2006 and 2020 the domaine was owned by the Scottish businessman Sir David Murray. A new team arrived in 2014 and introduced significant changes: reduced manipulation and handling, investment in renovated vats and equipment, manual harvesting in crates, sorting, elevating belts for filling vats, natural-yeast fermentations and gentle, controlled extractions. In 2020 Sir David Murray sold the domaine to Dr Jean-François Le Bigot, a Burgundy enthusiast who sought to push the estate's quality trajectory further. The existing team stayed in place, and the vineyards and wines moved to organic farming, with further investment in the cellar including a new thermoregulation system and rigorous barrel selection from leading coopers. Looking ahead, the domaine has undertaken new vine plantings and aims to develop its parcel holdings, add new cuvées and at least double production in the coming years. Domaine Jessiaume remains a privately held, active wine producer whose wines are sold under its own name and distributed in France and export markets.

History

Domaine Jessiaume was created in 1850 by the Jessiaume family in Santenay, in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. Over several generations the family worked the vines and built the estate's presence in the region, and the domaine states that it has participated in the history of Burgundy since that founding year. Today it produces wines from 15 different appellations, with about 15 hectares of vines spread across Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Auxey-Duresses, Santenay and Chassey-le-Camp. A major change in ownership came between 2006 and 2020, when the domaine was owned by the Scottish businessman Sir David Murray. In 2014 a new team arrived at the estate and introduced numerous changes in the vineyards and cellar. Manipulation and handling of the wines were reduced to a minimum, and investments were made to renovate the vat room and equipment. Harvesting is done manually in crates, with sorting also done by hand, and elevating belts are used to fill the vats. Vinification relies on natural yeasts, and the wines are made with gentle, controlled extractions. The stated objective is to obtain elegant, fine wines that respect the terroirs. The year 2020 marked a turning point. Sir David Murray sold the domaine to Dr Jean-François Le Bigot, a Burgundy enthusiast who wished to accelerate the estate's qualitative trajectory. The domaine's team remained in place, and the quality objective was intensified. The vineyards and wines moved to organic farming, and new investments were made in the cellar to refine the wines. A new thermoregulation system was installed, and a rigorous selection of barrels from the best coopers was initiated. Looking to the future, the domaine has carried out new vine plantings and is seeking to develop its parcel holdings. New cuvées are planned, and production is expected to at least double in the coming years. The estate continues to be privately held and active, selling its wines under the Domaine Jessiaume name.
