Overview

Donau Chemie Group describes itself as a family-owned company in the chemical industry built on solidarity, responsibility, and creativity. Its portfolio covers the production of inorganic chemicals (basic chemicals such as electrolysis products, sulfuric acid, amidosulfonic acid, and calcium carbide), water technology (precipitation and flocculation agents), activated carbon, and chemical distribution. The group states that around 1,200 colleagues work in twelve countries, and that its solutions combine environmental awareness with high safety standards.

History

Donau Chemie Group's official history page traces its corporate precursors to 1828, when Braun und Wagenmann was incorporated in Liesing on the outskirts of Vienna, producing spirit, brandy, and the dye Rosolio. In 1838 the company became known as Wagenmann & Seybel and started producing chemicals. By 1842 the Liesing plant produced sulfuric acid and other chemicals on a large scale, and by the turn of the century the company had become one of the monarchy's most important chemical producers. Further precursors include Continentale Gesellschaft für angewandte Elektrizität (1897), which planned carbide factories including one in Landeck, and Elektrobosna (1908), which built an electrolysis plant in Brückl, Carinthia. In 1917 the gunpowder factory Skodawerke-Wetzler AG, described as Donau Chemie's actual head office, was registered in the Commercial Register.
