Overview
DONIC is a German table tennis equipment brand. According to its official website, it is a second-generation German traditional company that has developed into one of the world's most important manufacturers of blades, rubbers, tables, clothing and equipment for table tennis. It was originally founded in Cologne by its namesake Dr. Georg Nicklas, and was later sold to the Schreiner family. Jan-Ove Waldner became its worldwide brand ambassador in 1993, and the brand also won over Swedish world champions Mikael Appelgren and Jörgen Persson. Its product range includes blades, rubbers, tables, clothing and competition shoes.
History
DONIC was originally founded in Cologne by its namesake Dr. Georg Nicklas. When Dr. Nicklas wanted to move to Sweden at the end of the 1980s, he sold his company to the Schreiner family. Through a friendship, Jan-Ove Waldner, described as the most legendary table tennis player of all time, became DONIC's worldwide brand ambassador in 1993. Frank Schreiner, who had by then taken over the business from his father Karlheinz, knew Waldner from his time at ATSV Saarbrücken. Besides Waldner, the two world champions Mikael Appelgren and Jörgen Persson were also won for DONIC; this Swedish super-trio became the golden generation of table tennis. Between 1995 and 2010, DONIC was the textile outfitter of the German national team.
