Overview
Donio is a Czech charitable crowdfunding and donation platform that allows people to easily help others. Through Donio, donors can financially support specific individuals, families, communities or organizations that have found themselves in difficult life situations or are carrying out public-benefit projects. The platform was founded in 2019 by David Procházka, and shortly after its launch the investment group Miton entered the platform to support its further development. Since 2021 Donio has also operated in Slovakia. In 2023 the platform crossed the threshold of 1 billion Czech korunas in donations raised, and since 2023 Donio has been owned by Nadace Livesport (the Livesport Foundation). Under this ownership, in 2024 Donio reached the milestone of 2 billion korunas in funds raised. According to its annual report, in 2024 more than 2,800 collections and projects were established on Donio, raising almost 660 million korunas. Anyone — an individual, a family, a non-profit organization or a municipality — can set up a collection on Donio. The founder of a collection describes their story, sets a target amount, and Donio provides the technical and administrative background, including online payments. Donors can contribute any amount, and the platform guarantees that the money raised is handed over in full to the recipient, even if the original target is not reached. Donio's operation is financed by voluntary contributions from donors. All collections on Donio undergo thorough verification carried out by the platform's experts in three phases — before launch, during the collection and after it ends. Before a collection starts, Donio checks the legitimacy of the purpose, the identity of the founder and the recipient, relevant documents (for example medical reports), the target amount and account ownership. During the collection it monitors suspicious payments and responds to donor reports. After it ends, it verifies whether the funds raised were actually used in accordance with the declared purpose. If a collection did not meet the conditions, the funds are used to help with a similar goal, always after prior communication with the founder. Thanks to this system, Donio maintains its credibility while enabling rapid help to people who urgently need it. Donio has played an important role in several extraordinary events in recent years and has become one of the main tools of public solidarity in times of crisis. In 2021 it enabled rapid and extensive help to people affected by the tornado in South Moravia, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in aid to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, and during the 2024 floods. Among the best-known individual collections is the collection for gene therapy for a boy known as Martínek, in which more than 300,000 donors took part and the total amount reached approximately 151 million CZK. Donio has also played a significant role in the Czech Republic in introducing modern treatment of brain tumors (glioblastomas) with Optune TTF therapy; public collections have enabled dozens of patients to gain access to treatment that was otherwise financially out of reach for them. Collections to help animals are also a significant area, where the total volume of donations exceeded 100 million CZK. In the autumn of 2024 there was a change in Donio's leadership. Founder David Procházka ended his role as CEO and moved into the role of strategic development with a focus on international expansion. Adam Szabó became the new CEO. The company, under the ownership of Nadace Livesport, states in its preamble its commitment to supporting activities in the humanitarian field and in the areas of human rights, the environment, community activities and inter-ethnic relations.
