Overview

DoorDash is an American on-demand commerce and delivery company headquartered in San Francisco. Its principal platform enables consumers to order prepared food, groceries, alcohol, convenience goods, and other merchandise from participating merchants, with delivery generally performed by independent couriers known as Dashers. The company also provides merchants with ordering software, logistics, customer acquisition, payment, and fulfillment services. Through acquisitions and international subsidiaries, its business has expanded beyond the original DoorDash marketplace into a broader local-commerce network. The company began in January 2013 as PaloAltoDelivery.com, founded by Stanford students Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore. The founders initially tested the service by taking delivery requests through a simple website and coordinating deliveries for Palo Alto restaurants. DoorDash incorporated under its current name in June 2013 and received seed funding from Y Combinator later that year. Its early model emphasized logistics infrastructure for restaurants that lacked their own delivery fleets, allowing the company to scale across neighborhoods and later across cities. DoorDash expanded internationally beginning with Toronto in 2015, entered Australia in 2019, and later launched in Japan, Germany, and New Zealand. In the United States, the company broadened its offering from restaurant delivery to grocery, convenience, alcohol, and multi-merchant ordering. Its DoubleDash feature allows customers to combine orders from multiple merchants, while merchant-facing products support digital ordering and delivery operations. DoorDash Kitchen, opened in 2019, represented an experiment in ghost kitchens and shared food-production infrastructure. Strategic acquisitions have been central to the company's development. DoorDash bought Caviar from Square in 2019, adding a premium restaurant-delivery brand; acquired Chowbotics in 2021 for food-preparation robotics; purchased Bbot in 2022 for restaurant and hospitality ordering technology; and acquired Wolt in 2022, giving it a major European and international operating platform. In 2025, it agreed to acquire Deliveroo and announced the acquisition of restaurant-reservation and guest-management company SevenRooms, further extending its reach across local commerce and hospitality technology. DoorDash became a public company in December 2020 and trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol DASH. It transferred its listing from the New York Stock Exchange to Nasdaq in 2023 and joined the Nasdaq-100 index later that year. Its scale has made it a leading food-delivery marketplace in the United States, but its business has also attracted sustained criticism and litigation concerning courier classification, pay and tip practices, merchant listings, pricing, privacy, and the fees charged to restaurants. The company has periodically changed its compensation, transparency, and compliance practices in response to regulatory pressure and lawsuits. DoorDash also operates social-impact programs. Project DASH works with food-rescue and food-security organizations to transport donated meals and surplus food. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its Main Street Strong initiative supported restaurants and delivery workers, including programs focused on business assistance and workforce development. The company has also partnered with Meals on Wheels and other community organizations. Its present identity is therefore broader than that of a restaurant-delivery app: DoorDash positions itself as infrastructure for local commerce, combining marketplace demand, merchant software, payments, and distributed last-mile logistics.

History

DoorDash originated in Palo Alto in January 2013, when Stanford students Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore created PaloAltoDelivery.com. The initial operation was deliberately simple: restaurant customers submitted delivery requests through a basic web page, and the founders coordinated fulfillment themselves. The experiment addressed a gap in the restaurant industry, where many businesses had demand for delivery but lacked the staff, software, or routing infrastructure to provide it efficiently. The company received $120,000 in seed funding from Y Combinator during the summer of 2013 in exchange for a reported 7% stake and incorporated as DoorDash in June. Its early growth depended on signing restaurants, recruiting couriers, and building technology that could match orders with available delivery workers. Rather than limiting itself to restaurants with established fleets, DoorDash supplied a flexible logistics layer that could serve smaller and larger merchants alike. International expansion began in Toronto in 2015. In the United States, DoorDash added major restaurant relationships, including CKE Restaurants in 2016 and Wendy's in 2017. By late 2018 it had moved into second place in U.S. food-delivery sales, and by early 2019 it had surpassed Grubhub on reported market share and consumer spending. In 2019 it expanded into Australia, acquired premium delivery service Caviar from Square for $410 million, and opened DoorDash Kitchen in Redwood City as an experiment in shared or ghost-kitchen operations. The company expanded its categories during the COVID-19 period. Grocery delivery launched in 2020, followed by broader convenience and alcohol delivery. DoorDash also introduced DoubleDash, allowing customers to combine orders from multiple merchants. Partnerships with KFC and Taco Bell broadened its chain-restaurant presence, while a physical restaurant collaboration with Burma Bites demonstrated an interest in operating or supporting merchant-facing venues as well as providing delivery. DoorDash raised substantial private financing before becoming public in December 2020. Its initial public offering raised approximately $3.37 billion. The company subsequently pursued technology and geographic acquisitions. Scotty Labs, acquired in 2019, brought tele-operations and remote-vehicle expertise. Chowbotics, acquired in 2021, developed robotic food-preparation systems. Wolt, acquired in a transaction announced in 2021 and completed in 2022, became a major international component of the group. Bbot, acquired in 2022, added digital ordering and payment technology for restaurants and hospitality businesses. The company's scale also produced regulatory and reputational challenges. Its former tipping system was criticized because customer tips could reduce the amount DoorDash itself had to contribute toward a guaranteed minimum. Couriers and journalists argued that the structure obscured the relationship between tips and driver pay. DoorDash later revised the system, but disputes continued. Other litigation addressed alleged worker misclassification, unauthorized restaurant listings, data security, pricing and fee practices, paid sick time, and consumer privacy. The company has denied or contested several allegations while entering settlements or making compliance changes in other matters. DoorDash's later strategy has emphasized becoming a general local-commerce platform. Its marketplace now covers restaurants, groceries, convenience products, alcohol, and selected retail goods. The acquisition of Deliveroo in 2025 expanded the group in Europe and other international markets, while SevenRooms added restaurant reservations and customer-management capabilities. Alongside commercial expansion, Project DASH and related programs have connected DoorDash's delivery network with food banks, food-rescue organizations, Meals on Wheels, restaurants, and community groups. The company's evolution has thus moved from a local food-delivery startup toward a globally connected platform for local ordering, merchant technology, and last-mile fulfillment.

DoorDash warns Bay Area restaurants about being listed on Bites without consent

In August, a slew of Bay Area restaurants received an email from DoorDash warning that they may be listed without their consent on the AI-native delivery startup Bites, saying DoorDash had heard from “several partners” that were added to the third-party platform without their knowledge. The email warned restaurants they may not have agreed to Bites’ “terms, pricing structures, or service standards”, may not control the accuracy of their menu or hours on Bites, and that, depending on the state, “such practices could be illegal”; it included instructions on how to contact Bites to request removal. Bites founder and CEO Bala Subramaniam said the company heard from 14 restaurant partners who had received the letter, and Bites acknowledged that some restaurants had requested removal, saying they had been listed from old demos. A DoorDash spokesperson said “some restaurant partners raised concerns” about appearing on Bites without their consent.
