The history of the Bergmann brand began in 2005 when Thomas Raphael browsed a brand database of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and came across the entry for the 'Dortmunder Bergmann Bier' trademark. A historic beer mug in his glass cabinet had previously reminded him of the brand, and he decided to re-register it. He learned that a brand can only survive if it is also linked to a real product, so in 2006 the next step was taken. Thomas searched for a brewery that could brew a suitable beer for him and found one in Hagen-Dahl. Since a batch of 6,000 liters seemed too much for him, he gathered 16 friends, took them on a brewery tour to Hagen-Dahl, and then asked if anyone would share the batch with him. The first batch of a new, old Bergmann Bier was born. The beer tasted good; Bergmann Bier was brewed, stored, filled into borrowed bottles and crates, distributed, and drunk. The history and beer met with great approval. Just a few weeks later, the next batch was ordered. This continued. In January 2007, Bergmann Bier reached a significant milestone when it was served at a private company party.
