Overview
The Dossenhütte is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), operated by its Oberaargau Section. It sits at 2,663 metres above sea level on the ridge between the Gstellihorn and the Dossen in the eastern Bernese Oberland, roughly 7.2 kilometres as the crow flies south-west of Innertkirchen and 3.0 kilometres from Rosenlaui. The hut is guarded and staffed from July to September, offering overnight accommodation and meals to mountaineers and hikers. The first Dossenhütte was built in 1879, but had to be dismantled in 1884 because of the rapid advance of the Dossengrat south-east glacier. The present hut was erected at its current location in 1899 with 24 places. Since then the roof has been raised somewhat and the building has been lengthened, probably by nearly half. Compared with other structures, it remains a very original hut. Access is on foot only. From Rosenlaui the blue-and-white marked trail reaches the hut in about four hours (SAC hiking scale T4). Above the Rosenlaui glacier gorge, the route to the Engelhornhütte branches off; the Dossenhütte approach becomes strenuous and not without danger from about 2,150 metres, taking another 1.5 to 2 hours although the straight-line distance is less than 700 metres. From Innertkirchen the hut can be reached via the Urbachtal in about six hours on a blue-and-white marked but less delicate path (T3+). The hut is a good base for ascents of the Dossen (3,144 m), Ränfenhorn (3,255 m), Rosenhorn (3,689 m), Mittelhorn (3,702 m) and the Wetterhorn (3,690 m).
History
The Dossenhütte is a shelter of the Oberaargau Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It lies 7.2 kilometres as the crow flies south-west of Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland and 3.0 kilometres as the crow flies from Rosenlaui, at an altitude of 2,663 metres above sea level. It is guarded from July to September, and overnight stays and meals are possible in the hut. The first Dossenhütte was built in 1879. In 1884 it had to be dismantled because of the rapid growth of the Dossengrat south-east glacier. In 1899 the hut was rebuilt at its present location with 24 places. Since then the roof has been raised somewhat and the hut has been lengthened, presumably by nearly half. Compared with other buildings, it is therefore a very original hut. Approach: Coming from Rosenlaui, the Dossenhütte is reached on the blue-and-white marked footpath in about 4 hours (SAC hiking scale T4). Above the Rosenlaui glacier gorge, the approach to the Engelhornhütte branches off, which is much easier to reach. From an altitude of about 2,150 metres the ascent is at some points arduous and not without danger; the climb from there still takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, although the straight-line distance is less than 700 metres. From Innertkirchen the hut can be reached via the Urbachtal in about 6 hours. This route is also marked blue-and-white but is less delicate than the approach from Rosenlaui (T3+). Summits: The hut is a good starting point for an ascent of the Dossen (3,144 m), Ränfenhorn (3,255 m), Rosenhorn (3,689 m), Mittelhorn (3,702 m) and the Wetterhorn (3,690 m).
