Overview

Dotto Trains is an Italian company based in Castelfranco Veneto, in the Veneto region, specialised in the design, production and sale of small tourist trains that run on rubber tyres or on rails. It describes itself as a world leader in this niche and emphasises certified, internationally homologated products made in Italy. The company was founded in 1966 by Ivo Dotto, who had already built a small rail train in 1962 and then developed a rubber-tyred tourist train four years later. Initially aimed mainly at children, the vehicles were adapted for adult passengers in 1972, when exports began. Over the decades Dotto Trains has expanded its range with electric models, aerodynamic designs such as the TM970, the colourful Funny Trains line introduced in 2006, and the Dottobus electric trains launched from 2014 to meet the latest European standards. The company remains privately held and sells both in Italy and internationally.

History

Dotto Trains was founded in 1966 by Ivo Dotto in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy. The origins of the business go back to 1962, when Ivo Dotto built a small train on rails. Noticing that the vehicle attracted many children, he built a rubber-tyred small train four years later, in 1966, and began constructing rubber-tyred trains from that year, becoming a pioneer in the field. These early small trains were mainly intended for children. In 1972, the company built a train adapted for adults, and the vehicles, until then sold mainly in Italy, began to be exported internationally. In 1995, the company revised its products to make them electric. Five years later, road trains with an aerodynamic design began to be developed under the name TM970. In 2006, a new range was launched: Funny Trains. Under this name, the company markets rubber-tyred trains with a distinctive design and warm colours. One of its vehicles was used at Esino Lario during the international Wikimania conference in June 2016. Since 2014, the company has offered electric trains meeting the latest European standards under the name Dottobus. The company continues to operate from its base in Castelfranco Veneto and presents itself as a world leader in the design, production and sale of quality tourist trains on rubber tyres and on rails, certified and compliant with all international homologations.
