History

The Styrofoam business traces to 1942, when Dow Chemical (USA) began manufacturing Styrofoam. In 1960 a technical assistance agreement concerning Styrofoam was concluded with Asahi-Dow Co., Ltd., a joint venture owned 50% by Asahi Kasei Kogyo and 50% by Dow Chemical International AG. The Kawasaki plant began operating in 1962, and sales in the building materials and tatami fields began in 1963; in 1964 the product was adopted in Japan Housing Corporation standard specifications. The Sapporo plant started in 1969 and the Kanuma plant in 1972. In 1982, DOW Kakoh K.K. was established to make the Styrofoam and Woodrack businesses independent from Asahi-Dow, with capital of 2.3 billion yen, and Dow Chemical A.G. acquired all shares of DOW Kakoh. The Kasaoka plant was completed in 1984 and began Styrofoam production, and in 1985 began Woodrack production. In 1988 Sumitomo Chemical acquired a capital stake. The company achieved complete non-fluorocarbon conversion of Styrofoam in 2004. Its registered head office is in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and its website now presents the company as DuPont Styro K.K.
