Overview

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Hyderabad. Founded in 1984 by Kallam Anji Reddy, the company initially concentrated on manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for other drug makers. It subsequently expanded into finished formulations, branded medicines, generic pharmaceuticals, biosimilars, diagnostics, critical-care products and research-based therapies. The company grew during a period when India's pharmaceutical industry was developing stronger domestic manufacturing capabilities and using process innovation to serve markets with lower medicine costs. Its early international business supplied APIs and finished products to less-regulated markets, allowing Dr. Reddy's to build scale before investing in facilities and regulatory systems suitable for the United States and Europe. During the late 1980s and 1990s, it broadened its manufacturing base and began pursuing approvals in highly regulated markets. Important early products included Norilet, one of its first recognized Indian brands, and Omez, a branded omeprazole product positioned at a substantially lower price than competing products in India. The company also developed a strategy around abbreviated new drug applications and patent challenges, seeking earlier entry for generic medicines in the United States. Its 2001 launch of generic fluoxetine, with 180-day exclusivity for one dosage strength after successful patent litigation, became a major turning point in its U.S. business. Dr. Reddy's expanded through subsidiaries, partnerships and acquisitions. The acquisition of American Remedies in 1999 strengthened its Indian portfolio, while the purchase of BMS Laboratories and Meridian Healthcare in the United Kingdom and Betapharm Arzneimittel in Germany increased its European presence. Research and discovery activities were developed through the Dr. Reddy's Research Foundation, the U.S.-based Reddy US Therapeutics operation and Aurigene Discovery Technologies. Although the company explored new drug discovery, its core business model remained based on generics, APIs, branded formulations and specialty products. The company became the first non-Japanese pharmaceutical company in the Asia-Pacific region to list on the New York Stock Exchange, using American Depositary Receipts. Its international business includes generics for regulated markets, API supply, licensing, contract research, biosimilars and partnerships in vaccines and specialty drugs. In India, the company combines branded prescription medicines with broader affordable-medicine programs, while in overseas markets it typically competes through regulatory filings, manufacturing capability and portfolio breadth. In 2020, Dr. Reddy's partnered with the Russian Direct Investment Fund on clinical development, regulatory work, manufacturing and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine in India. The vaccine received emergency-use authorization in India in April 2021. In 2024, the company announced a partnership with Pharmazz to bring centhaquine, marketed as Lyfaquin, to India. The brand is currently associated with affordable medicine access, vertically integrated pharmaceutical capabilities and international generic competition, while continuing to operate in mature products and selected high-value therapies.

History

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories began operations in 1984 as an API manufacturer. Its founder, Kallam Anji Reddy, had prior experience in India's public pharmaceutical sector. The company moved into finished and branded formulations in 1986 and soon introduced products such as Norilet and Omez. Omez became particularly significant because its lower-price positioning helped establish the company's Indian branded-prescription business. The company first expanded internationally by exporting APIs and finished products to markets where regulatory barriers were less demanding. This generated the scale needed to invest in facilities capable of meeting U.S. and European requirements. In 1987 it began shifting from being primarily a supplier to other manufacturers toward producing finished pharmaceutical products. It entered Russia in 1992 through a joint venture with Biomed, but exited the venture in 1995 after reported allegations concerning losses and the conduct of the Moscow operation. It also established Middle Eastern and Russian formulation operations during the early 1990s. Research became a central part of the company's long-term strategy. The Dr. Reddy's Research Foundation was established in 1992, and a U.S. discovery laboratory, Reddy US Therapeutics, was created in Atlanta in 2000. The company explored new chemical entities and specialty therapies in areas including oncology, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and infection, while using specialty generics as a bridge between conventional generic manufacturing and innovative drug development. Aurigene Discovery Technologies was established as a wholly owned contract-research subsidiary in 2002. By the late 1990s Dr. Reddy's was filing U.S. abbreviated new drug applications and using patent challenges to pursue early generic entry. It acquired American Remedies in 1999 and merged Cheminor Drug with its operations, strengthening its Indian finished-dose and API businesses. In 2000 it made its first commercial U.S. generic launch, followed by an exclusivity launch in 2001. The same year it listed American Depositary Receipts on the New York Stock Exchange. Its generic fluoxetine launch, covering a dosage form not secured by Barr Laboratories' competing exclusivity position, followed successful litigation against patents associated with Prozac and generated substantial initial sales. International acquisitions then broadened the platform. BMS Laboratories and Meridian Healthcare were acquired in the United Kingdom in 2002, Trigenesis Therapeutics was acquired in 2004 to add dermatology technology, and Betapharm Arzneimittel was acquired in 2006, giving the company a significant German generics presence. The company also entered research and commercialization agreements with firms including Novo Nordisk, Argenta Discovery, Rheoscience and Eurodrug Laboratories. Not every development program succeeded: a patent challenge involving Pfizer's Norvasc was unsuccessful and imposed costs on the specialty-generics strategy. Dr. Reddy's continued to combine internal development with acquisitions and licensing. In 2015 it purchased established UCB brands in South Asia and licensed U.S. development and commercialization rights for XenoPort's XP23829. During the COVID-19 pandemic it partnered with the Russian Direct Investment Fund on Sputnik V trials and Indian supply. The vaccine received emergency authorization in April 2021. In March 2024 the company announced a partnership with Pharmazz concerning centhaquine in India. Across its history, the business has remained centered on affordable medicines, APIs, regulated-market generics and selected specialty, biosimilar and innovative-product opportunities.
