Dragon Theatre

The Dragon Theatre Barmouth is a charity established for the social welfare of the people of Barmouth and its surrounding areas. Housed in a former Victorian chapel built in the 1890s, the venue contains a traditional 186-seat theatre auditorium plus function and community spaces, including a second studio stage for cabaret-style performances. It is managed and maintained by paid staff and volunteers, and runs a year-round programme of professional touring productions, film screenings, music concerts, community theatre, workshops, exhibitions and conferences, and local meetings. The theatre was officially opened with a gala concert on 30 October 1959.

The building that houses the Dragon Theatre and Barmouth Community Centre is an imposing granite and slate structure constructed in the 1890s as an English congregational chapel. After the Second World War, the local amateur dramatics society, Bermo Arts Club, had more than 300 members and a busy programme of performances held in other buildings in the town. In response to the need for a permanent venue, a committee was formed in the 1950s to find funding for converting the old chapel into a theatre. The money was eventually found and the theatre was created, including a relatively deep stage to accommodate the light opera and ballet performances popular at the time. The theatre was officially opened with a gala concert on 30 October 1959. Today the venue is run as a charity for the social welfare of the people of Barmouth and its surrounding areas, managed and maintained by paid staff and volunteers.
