Overview

The Dresdner Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) owned and operated by the Sektion Dresden of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club). It sits at an altitude of 2,308 metres in the Stubai Alps of Tyrol, Austria, within the Stubai Glacier ski area. First opened in 1875 as the first refuge hut in the Stubai Valley, it has been rebuilt, expanded and modernised many times over its long history. Today it offers 140 beds in the main building plus 14 beds in the adjacent Zollhütte, with double and multi-bed rooms, running hot and cold water, coin-operated showers and toilets, a dining area serving Tyrolean regional cuisine, a children's playground and an après-ski bar. The hut is a key stop on the Stubai High Trail (Stubaier Höhenweg) and is accessible both on foot and via the Stubai Glacier cable car. It operates seasonally, with winter and summer opening periods, and is a popular base for hikers, mountaineers and winter sports enthusiasts. The hut is not a commercial company in the conventional sense but a non-profit alpine association facility that functions as a hospitality brand within the mountaineering and alpine tourism market.

History

The Dresdner Hütte was founded by the Dresden Section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV). In April 1873, the section was established and initial considerations were made for building a mountain hut in the Tyrolean Alps. The first hut opened in April 1875 as the first refuge hut in the Stubai Valley and the twentieth hut of the German and Austrian Alpine Club. It was located at a different site and soon proved too small. In September 1887, a new hut building was opened at the current location, replacing the old one. In 1926/1927, the dining areas were expanded. After the Second World War, the Dresden Alpine Club sections were removed from the association register in Dresden, and from 1945 to 1956 the hut was administered by Austrian administrative bodies under trusteeship. In 1953, the Dresden section was re-established with its headquarters in Wuppertal, and in 1956 it took over the administration of the hut in agreement with the Austrian authorities. In 1965, the hut was renovated, especially the sanitary facilities. In 1967, the Dresden section reacquired the Dresdner Hütte from the Austrian Alpine Club (öAV) or German Alpine Club (DAV). In 1968, the longhouse and the extension were expanded. In 1973, the Stubai Glacier cable car began operation, bringing neighbours and easier access; the dining areas and storage and kitchen areas were expanded. In 1990, the large mattress dormitory was converted into modern room accommodations, fire protection systems were installed, and a fire-safe staircase was built. In 2002, a central block storage heating system was installed. In 2006, the sleeping quarters, the tenant's apartment, the drying room and ski storage were renovated, and all fire safety installations were expanded as per official requirements. In 2008, the entire kitchen was renovated as per official requirements, and the Zollhütte was leased and renovated. In 2012, the Fernau-Stadl was converted. In 2013, the serving area (masonry) and salad buffet were converted, and the Tiroler Stube was established. In 2014, further conversions took place. On 21 September 2019, a jubilee mountain mass was held at the Herz-Jesu-Kapelle of the Dresdner Hütte to mark the 150th anniversary of the DAV, with the participation of DAV Vice President Roland Stierle. The hut continues to operate seasonally, welcoming hikers in summer and skiers in winter.
