Overview

DRF1 – Deutsches Regionalfernsehen is a private German television channel serving the northern Rhineland-Palatinate region of Mittelrhein and Eifel. It is operated by DRF – Deutschland Fernsehen Produktions GmbH & Co. KG, a company headquartered in Koblenz and owned by the entrepreneur Frank Gotthardt. The channel's studios are located in the Medienhaus am Klostergut Besselich in Urbar. DRF1 launched on 5 February 2015 at 18:00 with an information programme, following a ceremonial launch at the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate on 7 February 2015. At its start it was carried on Vodafone Kabel Deutschland, making it available via cable in 13 of Germany's 16 federal states, and it also offers an internet livestream through its website. The channel aims to provide an "overview of the news situation in the 16 federal states" and describes itself as a "nationwide regional broadcaster" operating on a so-called "wind rose principle": every 15 minutes the focus shifts to a different region, with reports from the north on the hour, then the east, the south, and the west at quarter to. It broadcasts around the clock, supplemented by reports, documentaries and coverage from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in cooperation with its partner DAF. Since early May 2017 the channel has no longer been carried in Vodafone's network. In cooperation with Guang Hua Media (Deutschland) GmbH, DRF1 airs the TV magazine China Info, which it claims offers "probably the most intensive reporting on China in all of Germany"; the Süddeutsche Zeitung has criticised the magazine's closeness to Chinese state media. DRF1 also operates the subsidiary channels TV Mittelrhein and WWTV (Westerwald TV).

History

DRF1 – Deutsches Regionalfernsehen emerged as a private regional television channel for northern Rhineland-Palatinate, in the Mittelrhein and Eifel area. It is operated by DRF – Deutschland Fernsehen Produktions GmbH & Co. KG, a company based in Koblenz and owned by the entrepreneur Frank Gotthardt. The channel's premises are in the Medienhaus am Klostergut Besselich in Urbar. On 25 November 2014, a card was placed on Vodafone Kabel Deutschland announcing the channel's launch for 28 January 2015. Shortly after the turn of the year, the launch was postponed to 5 February 2015. Since 5 February 2015 at 18:00 the channel has been on air with an information programme, which among other things pointed to the broadcast of the ceremonial launch event at the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate on 7 February 2015. It broadcasts around the clock, supplemented by reports, documentaries and reports from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange of its cooperation partner DAF. Since the beginning of May 2017 the channel has no longer been fed into Vodafone's network. In cooperation with Guang Hua Media (Deutschland) GmbH, DRF1 shows the TV magazine China Info, which it says offers "probably the most intensive reporting on China in all of Germany". The Süddeutsche Zeitung criticised the magazine's closeness to Chinese state media. The channel also has subsidiary channels: TV Mittelrhein and WWTV (Westerwald TV).
