Driftwood Theatre

Driftwood Theatre is a Canadian theatre company based in Picton, Ontario. Founded in 1995, it spent nearly three decades touring outdoor, classical theatre across Ontario under the banner of the Bard's Bus Tour, performing for more than 115,000 people in over 45 outdoor venues. The company's mission is to tell stories wherever and whenever it can, in ways that are uncompromisingly live and surprisingly unexpected, with a particular emphasis on mythic and epic storytelling that responds to the present world. In 2023, Driftwood Theatre launched a bold new artistic vision, transitioning from a touring Shakespeare company into an incubator for new plays by Ontario-based theatre creators. Its programming now includes the Gillespie House Playwrights Retreat, the PATH (Playwrights Around The House) program, Story in Action (a playwriting program for students in Grades 7–12), and a D&D Camp. Driftwood Theatre was founded in 1995 and is based in Picton, Ontario, Canada. For nearly three decades, its signature program was the Bard's Bus Tour, which brought outdoor, classical theatre to communities across Ontario. Between 1995 and 2023, the tour performed for more than 115,000 people at over 45 outdoor venues. In 2004, the company launched Trafalgar 24, a 24-hour play-creation event held in a 19th-century castle in Whitby, Ontario. Over its run until 2020, Trafalgar 24 welcomed more than 300 artists who wrote, created, and performed over 100 short plays. In 2011, Driftwood introduced Beyond The Bard, its first new play development stream, which supported the creation of 10 full-length plays selected from creators at Trafalgar 24; this program ran until 2020. In 2022, the company began the Gillespie House Playwrights Retreat and the PATH (Playwrights Around The House) programs. In 2023, Driftwood Theatre launched a bold new artistic vision, transitioning from a touring Shakespeare company into an incubator for new plays by Ontario-based theatre creators, with works that respond to the contemporary world through epic and mythic storytelling. The company also runs Story in Action, a playwriting program for students in Grades 7–12 that includes in-class workshops and an intensive, as well as a D&D Camp. Driftwood Theatre's mission emphasizes live, unexpected storytelling, community participation, and inclusivity.
