Overview
Druckerei Konstanz GmbH is a German printing company based in Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg. It is one of the largest printing houses in the state and serves as the main printing facility for the Südkurier newspaper, as well as producing customer newspapers, trade fair newspapers, magazines, and advertising supplements. The company traces its origins to 1927, when the Druckerei am Fischmarkt was owned by the publisher Reuß & Itta, which published the Konstanzer Zeitung. The current logo still features two interlocking fish, a reference to the original location at the Fish Market in Konstanz's old town. After World War II, in 1945, the printing house was acquired by Südkurier GmbH. In 1974, the name was officially changed to Druckerei und Verlagsanstalt Konstanz GmbH. In 1989, the company decided to build a new printing center in the Konstanz industrial area, which began operation in 1990, and the company was renamed Druckerei Konstanz GmbH. That same year, the Südkurier Medienhaus group became a wholly owned subsidiary of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2011, Mediengruppe Pressedruck acquired 51% of the shares, and in 2013 it acquired the remaining 49%, reaching 100% ownership. The company is known for its use of waterless offset printing, which it adopted in 2010 with the installation of a KBA Cortina press from Koenig & Bauer. This technology eliminates the need for dampening solution, reduces emissions, and saves energy and water. The printing house produces over 120 million newspapers and newspaper-like publications annually and consumes 11,000 tonnes of paper. It is part of a network that includes werk zwei Print+Medien Konstanz GmbH, the letter service Arriva, and online media activities. The company emphasizes sustainability, using coldset printing, environmentally friendly papers with up to 100% recycled fibers, and a combined heat and power plant (Blockheizkraftwerk) that has been in operation since late 2013.
History
The history of Druckerei Konstanz begins in 1927, when the Druckerei am Fischmarkt was owned by the publisher Reuß & Itta, which published the Konstanzer Zeitung. The company was located at the Fish Market in the old town of Konstanz, which is why the current logo still depicts two interlocking fish. After World War II, in 1945, the printing house was acquired by Südkurier GmbH. Initially, the newspaper printing house at the Fish Market produced one edition per week. In 1974, after official confirmation, the name was changed to Druckerei und Verlagsanstalt Konstanz GmbH. In 1989, the company decided to build a new printing center in the Konstanz industrial area to remain economically viable. With the commissioning of the new printing center in 1990, the company was renamed Druckerei Konstanz GmbH. In the same year, the Südkurier Medienhaus group became a wholly owned subsidiary of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck. In 2011, Mediengruppe Pressedruck acquired 51% of the shares from Holtzbrinck, and in 2013 it acquired the remaining 49%, reaching 100% ownership. The new printing center also saw the inauguration of the KBA Express printing press, which ran continuously for 20 years until it was replaced in 2010 by a KBA Cortina press from Koenig & Bauer. The KBA Cortina uses waterless offset printing, a further development of conventional offset printing that eliminates the need for dampening solution. This technology, along with coldset printing, has allowed the company to reduce paper waste by 43% (from 755,000 kg in 2008 to 433,000 kg in 2011), save 15% energy and 430,000 liters of water annually. In late October 2013, a modern combined heat and power plant (Blockheizkraftwerk) was commissioned, utilizing combined heat and power (CHP) to generate electricity and use waste heat. The company continues to operate as part of the Südkurier Medienhaus and Mediengruppe Pressedruck network, printing over 120 million newspapers and newspaper-like publications annually and consuming 11,000 tonnes of paper. Delivery of publications is handled by partner companies such as Direkt Kurier Zustell GmbH and PSG, while letter deliveries are managed by arriva.
