Overview

Drukarnia i Księgarnia św. Wojciecha (St. Adalbert Printing House and Bookstore) is a Polish Catholic publishing and media company based in Poznań. It traces its origins to 1895, when a publishing house was established, and was formally founded in 1897 on the initiative of Archbishop Florian Stablewski. It is recognized as the oldest Catholic publishing house still operating in Poland. Over its long history, the company has published a wide range of materials, from strictly religious literature to Polish and world belles-lettres, textbooks, journalism, and scholarly books. It also operated a bookstore, a rotogravure printing facility from 1914, a paper mill called "Malta" near Poznań, and a pulp factory in Upper Silesia. The company was destroyed during World War II, but its employees managed to evacuate hundreds of tons of books to Warsaw. After 1945 it fell under the management of the Central Graphic Industry. In 1985 it received the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Social Award for its contributions to Catholic and national values. In 2013 the company moved its headquarters to Chartowo in Poznań, and two years later it changed its name to Święty Wojciech Dom Medialny. The sole owner of the company is the Archbishop of Poznań, Stanisław Gądecki, by virtue of his office, and the President of the Board is Rev. Dr. Tomasz Siuda.

History

The Drukarnia i Księgarnia św. Wojciecha (St. Adalbert Printing House and Bookstore) is one of the oldest continuously operating Polish publishers. Its origins date to 1895, when a publishing house was established, and it was formally founded in 1897 in Poznań through the efforts of Archbishop Florian Stablewski. It is the oldest Catholic publishing house active in Poland. The publishing house's output covered a wide thematic range: from strictly religious literature to Polish and universal belles-lettres, textbooks, journalism, and scholarly books. From 1914 the bookstore operated a rotogravure machine, and by 1919 it owned the "Malta" paper mill near Poznań and a paper pulp factory in Upper Silesia. A long-time director of the bookstore was Bishop Stanisław Adamski. The company was destroyed during World War II; however, in the first months of the occupation, thanks to the efforts of Stefan Szpinger and other employees, several hundred tons of books were evacuated from the company's warehouses to Warsaw. After 1945 it came under the management of the Central Graphic Industry. For many years the director of the bookstore was Rev. Czesław Piotrowski, who before the war had founded a gymnasium and lyceum on Głogowska Street in Poznań, and after the war headed the Reconstruction Directorate of Poznań Cathedral. In 1985 the bookstore received the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński Social Award for its merits in promoting Catholic and national values. In 2013 the company moved its headquarters to Chartowo in Poznań (ul. Chartowo 5), and two years later it changed its name to Święty Wojciech Dom Medialny. In 2018 Radio Emaus, previously owned by the Archdiocese of Poznań, was incorporated into the company's structure. Currently, Święty Wojciech Dom Medialny comprises several subunits: Wydawnictwo Świętego Wojciecha, the editorial office of Przewodnik Katolicki, Radio Emaus, the editorial office of Mały Przewodnik Katolicki, the editorial office of KnC – Króluj nam Chryste, the editorial office of Biblioteka Kaznodziejska, the Księgarnia Świętego Wojciecha, and the Catholic online bookstore SwietyWojciech.pl. The sole owner of ŚWDM is the Archbishop of Poznań, Stanisław Gądecki, by virtue of his office. The President of the Board is Rev. Dr. Tomasz Siuda.
