Overview

D.R.V. Euros (Drienerlose Roeivereniging Euros) is a Dutch rowing club based in Enschede, Netherlands, founded on 8 April 1965 as the Drienerlose Watersport Association Euros. It is closely tied to the University of Twente, which was established on the Drienerlo estate, and it has grown into one of the largest rowing clubs in the region with more than 350 members. The club supports rowers from beginners through to Olympic-level athletes. Euros organises two major annual regattas: the one-day Knorrensteijn Memorial Regatta (KMR), which draws around 400 rowers and is one of the first regattas of the academic year and part of the NSRF autumn cup, and the two-day Grolsch Euros Drienerlo Regatta (GEDR or EDR), which is much larger with more than 2,000 participants and is part of several NSRF competitions. Historically, the club began as an almost exclusively competitive rowing association. In the 1980s it introduced club rowing to ease the transition to competitive rowing. In 1978, with about 40 competitive rowers among fewer than 70 members, it was named the most successful senior club in the Netherlands by the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation. In 1995 Euros won the Varsity with Sjors van Iwaarden, Niels van Steenis, Joris Loefs and Arne van Eupen, coxed by Jeroen Webers in the boat Barfleur and coached by Rutger Röell. In 1996 club member Niels van Steenis won gold in the Holland Acht at the Atlanta Summer Olympics. Since 1999 the club has been based at the university water sports complex on Auke Vleerstraat. In 2018 member Minke Holleboom took second place at the World Rowing Under 23 in the W4x field. The club regularly qualifies for international regattas such as the Holland Beker in Amsterdam 2022 and the EUSA Rowing Championship in Istanbul 2022, and in the same year won various national championships in the men's 4+, women's 4+ and men's 2x fields, among others.

In the early 1960s rowing was not yet possible in Enschede. During those years the Technical University of Twente was founded on the Drienerlo estate. On 8 April 1965 the Drienerlose Watersport Association Euros was founded. In its early years the club consisted almost exclusively of competitive rowers. In the 1980s club rowing was introduced to ease the step towards competitive rowing. In 1978 Euros, with about 40 competitive rowers among fewer than 70 members, was named the most successful senior club in the Netherlands by the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation. In 1995 Euros won the Varsity with Sjors van Iwaarden, Niels van Steenis, Joris Loefs and Arne van Eupen; Jeroen Webers coxed the boat Barfleur, and the team was coached by successful coach Rutger Röell. In 1996 Euroïd, as members of the club are called, Niels van Steenis won gold in the Holland Acht at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Since 1999 the club has been located in the university water sports complex of the University of Twente on Auke Vleerstraat. In 2018 Euroïd Minke Holleboom took second place at the World Rowing Under 23 2018 in the W4x field. The club regularly qualifies for international regattas such as the Holland Beker in Amsterdam 2022 and the EUSA Rowing Championship in Istanbul 2022.
