Overview
Dtonic Corporation (Korean: 디토닉 주식회사) is a South Korean AI data platform company headquartered in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. It was founded in 2014 as a spin-off from a Hyundai Motor Company in-house venture, originally under the name Ilmail (일마일). In 2018, Yong-Joo Jeon (전용주), who had been part of the Hyundai Motor venture business team from the beginning, became CEO and the company was renamed Dtonic. The name combines "Data" and "Tonic," a reference to how gin and tonic together create something greater than their parts — similarly, Dtonic aims to add value to raw data. Dtonic positions itself as a full-stack AI data platform company serving governments, enterprises, and operators of complex real-world systems. Its core platform, D.Hub, is an end-to-end AI data platform that ingests, models, delivers, and acts on data from sensors, systems, and devices. It features ontology-based semantic modeling, open REST APIs, and real-time data fabric capabilities. The company also offers D.EView, an intelligent display solution for retail, factories, and logistics warehouses, and D.Edge, an edge AIoT solution for real-time analytics at the source. A key proprietary technology is Geo-Hiker™, which optimizes spatiotemporal big data processing. Dtonic's primary application areas include AI cities (urban operations, mobility, public safety, smart infrastructure), defense and security (multi-domain situational awareness), manufacturing and industry (real-time operations and process optimization), retail (intelligent store operations and automation), and healthcare (data-driven operational systems). The company claims over 100 customers and highlights performance metrics such as 2.85× query performance improvement, 93.93% AI accuracy (RAGAS), and 814× spatial processing speed improvement powered by Geo-Hiker™. Dtonic has received recognition including being named a Financial Times & Statista Asia-Pacific High-Growth Company (2023), selection for the government-led Global TIPS program (2024), and designation as a Global ICT Future Unicorn (2021). It won the South Summit Korea startup competition (2024), the US Department of Commerce SelectTech Korea & Asia competition (2021), and the Korea-UK Tech Rocketship Award (2019). In 2025, it was designated an "AI Factory Specialist Company" by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT). The company raised approximately 6 billion KRW from investors including Korea Development Bank, IBK Capital, and Aion Investment. It filed for KOSDAQ preliminary review but later withdrew.
History
Dtonic Corporation was established in 2014 as a spin-off from a Hyundai Motor Company in-house venture, initially operating under the name Ilmail (일마일). The founding team included individuals from Hyundai Motor's venture business team. In 2018, Yong-Joo Jeon (전용주), who had been with the venture from its inception and had led Hyundai Motor's venture business team, became CEO. Under his leadership, the company was renamed Dtonic, a portmanteau of "Data" and "Tonic." The name reflects the company's philosophy: just as gin and tonic water combine to create a premium cocktail, Dtonic adds proprietary technology to raw data to create new business value. Following the rebranding, Dtonic focused on developing its core technology stack around spatiotemporal big data processing and artificial intelligence. The company built expertise in areas such as spatiotemporal ontology-based data processing, high-speed distributed data processing, data governance and lineage, multimodal data ingestion and storage, codeless AI/MLOps, and AIoT technologies. A key proprietary technology, Geo-Hiker™, was developed to analyze the structure and usage patterns of spatiotemporal big data and optimize data processing environments. Dtonic's platform portfolio evolved to include D.Hub, an integrated AI data solution for collecting, processing, and managing large-scale data; D.EView, an AI data management system that visualizes data through IoT displays; and D.Edge, an edge computing solution that reduces cloud dependency and performs immediate on-site data processing. D.Edge was applied to Pharmzigi (팜지기), an integrated service for smart pharmacy transformation including security management and prescription management. Throughout its growth, Dtonic received numerous awards and recognitions. It won the Korea-UK Tech Rocketship Award in 2019 and the SelectTech Korea & Asia competition organized by the US Department of Commerce in 2021. It was selected as a Global ICT Future Unicorn in 2021 and as an Asia-Pacific High-Growth Company by the Financial Times and Statista in 2023. In 2024, it won the South Summit Korea startup competition and was selected for the government-led Global TIPS program. CEO Yong-Joo Jeon received the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in 2022. The company also won the Republic of Korea Excellent Patent Award for five consecutive years from 2019 to 2023. In 2025, Dtonic was designated as an "AI Factory Specialist Company" by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT). It subsequently raised approximately 6 billion KRW from investors including Korea Development Bank, IBK Capital, and Aion Investment. The company filed for KOSDAQ preliminary listing review but later withdrew its application. Also in 2025, Dtonic won the AI&DATA AWARD at the World Smart City Expo (WSCE). Today, Dtonic serves over 100 customers across government and private sectors, with its platform applied in AI cities, defense and security, manufacturing and industry, retail, and healthcare. The company continues to expand its domain coverage, positioning itself as a full-stack AI data platform provider for real-world operations.
