Overview

Dunarit AD (Дунарит АД) is a Bulgarian enterprise specialising in the design, manufacture and trade of military and engineering products. Its origins trace back to a gunpowder factory established in 1903, making it one of the oldest continuously operating defence-industrial names in Bulgaria. Today the company is headquartered in Ruse, on the Danube in northern Bulgaria, with its main production base in the neighbouring village of Nikolovo. The company describes itself as a modern firm for the design, introduction, production and disposal (utilization) of aviation, artillery and engineering ammunition, industrial explosives, and products with civilian applications. Its product families include aviation ammunition, artillery ammunition, engineering ammunition, industrial explosives, and machines for the repair and maintenance of railway tracks. Over the decades it has also established itself as a manufacturer of detonating components and related energetic materials. Dunarit's history reflects the wider trajectory of Bulgarian industry: founded in 1903, nationalised in 1947 under the socialist state, registered as a joint-stock company in 1991 after the fall of communism, and privatised in 2005 through the direct sale of 92% of its shares. The enterprise was later linked to Corporate Commercial Bank (Corpbank), and after that bank's collapse in 2014 and a series of legal and financial disputes, it was acquired by arms trader Emiliyan Gebrev. As of 2023 the company reported sales volume of BGN 214 million — mainly from artillery ammunition and aviation bombs — a profit of BGN 50.2 million, and 1,073 employees. Dunarit is known on international markets as a company with traditions, preserving generations of experience in the design, production and trade of military and engineering products. Its ownership is private, and it operates as a joint-stock company rather than a listed public entity.

History

Dunarit's history begins in 1903, when a gunpowder factory was established — the origin from which the present-day company traces its lineage. This makes Dunarit one of the oldest industrial names in the Bulgarian defence sector, with a heritage spanning more than a century of design, production and trade in military and engineering products. In 1947, in the early years of the socialist state, the enterprise was nationalised. For the following decades it operated as a state-owned industrial facility within Bulgaria's planned economy, producing ammunition and related energetic materials. During this period the company developed and consolidated its capabilities as a manufacturer of detonating components and other military-industrial products. After the political changes of 1989–1990, the state enterprise was registered as a joint-stock company in 1991, marking its transition to a corporate legal form. In 2005 the company was privatised through the direct sale of 92% of its shares, moving into private ownership. In the years that followed, the enterprise became associated with Corporate Commercial Bank (Corpbank). After the bank's collapse in 2014, Dunarit became entangled in a series of legal and financial disputes. Ultimately the company was acquired by Emiliyan Gebrev, an arms trader, who remains its owner. By 2023 Dunarit reported sales volume of BGN 214 million, mainly from artillery ammunition and aviation bombs, with a profit of BGN 50.2 million and 1,073 employees. Its main production base is located in the village of Nikolovo, adjacent to Ruse, while its registered seat is in Ruse itself. The company continues to present itself on international markets as a firm with traditions, preserving the accumulated experience of generations in the design, production and trade of military and engineering products.
