Overview

The Dunie Weizman Conservatory of Music in Haifa is the oldest music education institution in Haifa, Israel, founded in December 1924 by pianist Gita Dunie-Weizman (sister of Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann), singer and voice teacher Arie Friedman-Levov, piano teacher Rachel Krugliakov, and violin teacher A. Klein. Initially operating out of rented apartments in the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood, the school offered piano and violin lessons. In 1934 it became known as the "Music Institute" (HaMakhon leMusika). In 1947 the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood committee donated a one-story building on Bezalel Street, which became the institute's permanent home and the first venue in northern Israel to bring classical concerts to the general public. A second floor was added in the early 1960s, and in 1966 the Friedman-Levov Concert Hall, seating up to 150, was inaugurated on the third floor. After Gita Dunie-Weizman's death, the institute was renamed the Dunie Weizman Conservatory. Today the conservatory offers individual instruction in piano and keyboard skills, violin, viola, cello, classical guitar, recorder, flute, clarinet, and saxophone; open voice and choir lessons; jazz, composition, and creative writing classes; pre-instrumental classes and a concert series for young children; and group theory lessons by level for students and adults. In the 12th grade, students take a final examination on their instrument and receive a certificate, while also preparing for the music matriculation exam. The conservatory's honorary president is Zubin Mehta. Notable alumni include pianists Avner Arad, David Bar-Ilan, Yahli Wagman, Eitan Pessen, and Benjamin Ravitz; violinists Ivry Gitlis and Zvi Zeitlin; and dancer Ruth Eshel.

History

The Dunie Weizman Conservatory of Music was founded in December 1924 in the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood of Haifa by pianist Gita Dunie-Weizman (sister of Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first president), singer and voice teacher Arie Friedman-Levov, piano teacher Rachel Krugliakov, and violin teacher A. Klein. It was the first music school in Haifa. In its early years, the school had no permanent building; lessons were held in several rented apartments in the neighborhood. The curriculum included piano and violin, and the teaching staff included three teachers, among them Weizman herself. In 1934 the school became known as the "Music Institute" (HaMakhon leMusika). In 1947 the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood committee donated a one-story building on Bezalel Street, which became the institute's permanent home. From then on, music studies for adults and youth were conducted there, and concerts and musical events were held for the general public. For many years, the Music Institute was the only place in northern Israel that brought classical concerts to the general public. In the early 1960s, a second floor was added to the building, and in 1966 the Friedman-Levov Concert Hall, seating up to 150, was inaugurated on the third floor. After the death of Gita Dunie-Weizman, the Music Institute was renamed the Dunie Weizman Conservatory. The conservatory has maintained a diverse musical program for youth and adults. Its honorary president is Zubin Mehta. Notable alumni include pianists Avner Arad, David Bar-Ilan, Yahli Wagman, Eitan Pessen, and Benjamin Ravitz; violinists Ivry Gitlis and Zvi Zeitlin; and dancer Ruth Eshel.
