Overview
DWF donnawomanfemme is an Italian feminist journal of thought and political practice. According to its own presentation, it is a quarterly, autonomous and self-financed periodical that trades the burden of economic management for the freedom to think, experiment, relaunch and conflict. It first appeared in 1975, conceived and desired by Annarita Buttafuoco, as a journal of women's studies. It was a precursor to the gender studies current in Italy and, from its earliest years, carried important voices of Italian and foreign authors, both well known and lesser known. In 1986, on the initiative and intuition of Buttafuoco herself, the journal changed editorial board and course, becoming a journal of feminist politics, giving thought and voice to women's political subjectivity and their relationships. It has always appeared in print, and since 2020 also digitally, without interruption, despite crises, editorial changes, transformations and unforeseen events. The journal is published by the Cooperativa Utopia, which was formed in 1978 to publish the magazine on its own behalf. Its editorial board has included, over the decades, Annarita Buttafuoco, Tilde Capomazza, Maria Teresa Morreale, Maria Grazia Paolini, Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti, Dora Stiefelmeier, Flo Westoby, Luciana Di Lello, Silvia Costantini, Donata Lodi, Maricla Tagliaferri, Gabriella Turnaturi, Annalisa Biondi, Paola Bono, Patrizia Cacioli, Laura Fortini, Federica Giardini and Paola Masi. After the death of Paola Masi in 2022, a long-time editor, the editorial team numbered six: Patrizia Cacioli, Federica Castelli, Teresa Di Martino (current director), Roberta Paoletti, Giada Bonu and Noemi Ciarniello. The journal is still active and in 2025 marked fifty years of publication.
History
DWF donnawomanfemme is an Italian feminist journal founded in 1975 by Annarita Buttafuoco. It began as a journal of women's studies, anticipating the gender studies current in Italy, and from its earliest years carried important voices of Italian and foreign authors. The French Wikipedia entry states that the magazine was founded in 1977 by Annarita Buttafuoco and Tilde Capomazza, and describes three periods. Four issues appeared in 1975 and 1976, edited by Bulzone, with the subtitle Rivista internazionale di studi antropologici storici e sociali sulla donna (International journal of anthropological, historical and social studies on women). The first issue was produced in partnership with Ida Magli and Ginevra Conti Odorisio, who left the journal over strategic differences. From late 1976 to 1985 it appeared as Nuova DWF donnawomenfemme, Quaderni di studi internazionali sulla donna. Some issues were published by the publisher Coines, which closed; in 1978 the decision was taken to form a cooperative, Cooperativa Utopia, which published the magazine on its own behalf. In 1986 the title reverted to DWF donnawomenfemme. According to the journal's own account, in 1986, on the initiative and intuition of Buttafuoco, the journal changed editorial board and course, becoming a journal of feminist politics, giving thought and voice to women's political subjectivity and their relationships. The editorial committee has included, over the years, Annarita Buttafuoco, Tilde Capomazza, Maria Teresa Morreale, Maria Grazia Paolini, Biancamaria Scarcia Amoretti, Dora Stiefelmeier, Flo Westoby and Luciana Di Lello (1976); Annarita Buttafuoco, Silvia Costantini, Donata Lodi, Maricla Tagliaferri and Gabriella Turnaturi (1981); Annalisa Biondi, Paola Bono, Patrizia Cacioli, Laura Fortini, Federica Giardini and Paola Masi (1998). The journal has always appeared in print, and since 2020 also digitally, without interruption, despite crises, editorial changes, transformations and unforeseen events. After the death of Paola Masi in 2022, a long-time editor, the editorial team numbered six: Patrizia Cacioli, Federica Castelli, Teresa Di Martino (current director), Roberta Paoletti, Giada Bonu and Noemi Ciarniello.
