History

Dynamit Nobel Defence GmbH (DND) emerged as an independent GmbH from the defence division of the former Dynamit Nobel AG. The company states it looks back on more than 60 years of successful development and production of shoulder-supported multi-purpose weapons. Its portfolio has broadened considerably over the decades and today includes holistic protection technologies for land platforms, fire protection for civil and military applications, blocking capability, digital solutions, test charges, environmental and qualification services, as well as research and development in several military fields. The company's history page also traces earlier milestones: Ascanio Sobrero invented nitroglycerin in 1847; in autumn 1866 the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel experimented with explosives near Geesthacht, having set up his test laboratory on a barge on the Elbe at a safe distance from houses and people, aiming to further develop highly dangerous nitroglycerin; on 14 June 1902 Ferdinand Kuhmichel and Ludwig Spieß acquired 30 acres of land in Würgendorf; in September 1903 construction of the factory was approved; and in the night of 30 July 1916 a serious accident occurred in which about 180 tonnes of explosive detonated.
