Overview

Dynatone Corp. (다이나톤) is a South Korean manufacturer of digital pianos and electronic musical instruments. The company traces its origins to the electronic musical instrument division of KEC, which began producing electronic instruments in 1987 under the DYNATONE brand — the first such production in South Korea. In 2000 the division was spun off and Dynatone Corp. was established as an independent company. Its headquarters are in Seoul, while its manufacturing smart factory and research institute are located in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Dynatone's core product line is digital pianos, and the company has developed its own sound chips and keyboard actions, including the RPS V3 SOUND chip (2002), the ARHA (Advanced Real Hammer Action) keyboard (2010), and the ROS V5 & V5 Plus SOUND chip (2015). It also developed the world's first digital piano dedicated to music education, the KDP-940, in 1998, and has produced automatic-playing pianos with proprietary technology. The company holds numerous patents related to intelligent digital pianos, Korean traditional instrument sounds, and brain-activity management systems using digital pianos. Dynatone has been recognized with various awards and designations, including the 'Hi Seoul Brand Company' title for nine consecutive years, the 'Global Living Luxury Goods' selection in 2015, and the 'World-Class Small and Medium Enterprise' designation. It has participated in the world's three major musical instrument trade shows (Musik Messe, NAMM Show, Music China) for 19 consecutive years since 2000. In 2013 it established Dynatone America Corp. (DAC) in the United States. The company exports to over 30 countries across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. As of the 2020s, Dynatone continues to operate from its expanded Seoul headquarters and Gumi factory, and remains focused on digital pianos and music education solutions.

History

Dynatone's history is intertwined with that of KEC (Korea Electronics Company). In 1969, Korea Toshiba Corporation, a predecessor of both KEC and Dynatone, was established. In 1972, Korea Television Corporation was founded. In 1974, Korea Toshiba changed its name to Korea Electronics Company (KEC). In 1981, KEC absorbed Korea Television Corporation and unified under the KEC name. In 1984, KEC established its comprehensive research institute. In 1987, KEC began production of electronic musical instruments under the DYNATONE brand — the first such production in South Korea. In 1994, cumulative production of electronic instruments surpassed 5 million units. In 1995, KEC developed a sound source IC for digital pianos and supplied electronic keyboards to Samsung Electronics under the DYNATONE brand. In 1996, KEC acquired LG Electronics' electronic musical instrument division, relocated its production base to Gumi, and established an electronic musical instrument research institute. In 1997, cumulative production surpassed 7 million units. In 1998, KEC developed the KDP-940, the world's first digital piano dedicated to music education, and began exporting to about 30 countries in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In 2000, KEC changed its name to KEC Co., Ltd., spun off its electronic musical instrument division, and established Dynatone Co., Ltd. In 2001, Dynatone received the 'One Million Dollar Export Tower' and the 'Export Meritorious Service Award' from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, and was selected as a 'Technology Evaluation Venture Company'. In 2007, it was certified as an 'INNOBIZ' (technology-innovative SME). In 2008, it was certified as a venture company by KIBO. In 2010, it developed the ARHA (Advanced Real Hammer Action) keyboard.
