Overview
e-muzyka is a Polish digital music aggregator and distributor headquartered in Warsaw. Founded on 30 October 2003 as e-Muzyka.pl Sp. z o.o. by Tomasz Plewicki, Dariusz Romańczyk and Sylwia Knaź, it has grown into the largest player in the Polish market for digital music distribution. The company delivers content to over 50 major digital platforms worldwide, operates a partner network of 500 YouTube channels, and works with more than 3,000 labels and artists. It is a member of the Związek Producentów Audio-Video (ZPAV). Since 2021 e-muzyka has been part of the Empik Group capital structure, and in May 2023 Empik acquired 100% of its shares, delisting it from the Warsaw Stock Exchange's NewConnect market in September 2023. The company offers both digital and physical distribution, marketing campaigns, playlist promotion, and technological solutions for the audio-video market. Its services cover mainstream and niche genres, serving major labels such as Sony Music, Warner Music, Universal Music, and independent artists alike. e-muzyka operates platforms including emuze.me for independent artists and Emunet for large licensors. It has been responsible for major Polish digital music services such as Plus Music (formerly Muzodajnia), PlayTheMusic, MyBox, GoOn, and Empik Music. The company continues to develop its 360-degree strategy, integrating physical promotion in Empik stores, advertising campaigns, and radio partnerships.
History
e-muzyka was founded on 30 October 2003 as e-Muzyka.pl Sp. z o.o. by Tomasz Plewicki, Dariusz Romańczyk and Sylwia Knaź. In 2006 the company was acquired by IQ Mobile. The following year it purchased the online store mp3player.pl. On 17 July 2007, the District Court for the Capital City of Warsaw transformed the enterprise into a joint-stock company. The company established cooperation with major Polish record labels such as Magic Records, Jazzboy Records, Universal Music, and UMC Records, and became a member of the Polish Audio-Video Producers Association (ZPAV). Its services were used by entities including Interia, Polsat and TVN television networks, and mobile operators Orange Polska, Play, and Plus. By 2007, e-muzyka had several thousand musical tracks, photos, graphics, and video materials. In 2008, it began cooperation with EMI Music Poland and Sony BMG Music Entertainment Poland. In May of that year, it acquired the producer rights to radio programs Emi-Pro. Also in 2008, together with Polkomtel, e-muzyka created Muzodajnia (rebranded as Plus Music in 2017), Poland's first subscription service for digital download music. It also took over the technology brand Xofto, responsible for mobile games such as Włatcy móch, Ewa Sonnet, Jeż Jerzy, and the Kartony series from 4fun.tv. In the first half of 2009, it signed agreements with Polska Telefonia Komórkowa Centertel and Nokia Corporation, providing them with a catalog of music files, ringtones, and ringbacks. In the next half-year, these accounted for over 20% of e-muzyka's turnover. The second-half report planned expansion into Belarus and Ukraine. In 2010, cooperation was established with S.P. Records, which then held works by artists such as Kazik, Kult, KNŻ, Strachy na Lachy, Pidżama Porno, Happysad, and Kaliber 44. Beyond digital operations, the company also handled physical music distribution, including supplies to store chains such as Empik, MediaMarkt, and Saturn. In February 2011, NFI Empik Media & Fashion became the majority shareholder of e-muzyka. That same year, it acquired the catalog of archival recordings of Polskie Nagrania "Muza," then in bankruptcy. Annually, e-muzyka began signing contracts with several local labels and independent artists (including MaRina). By 2014, the number of independent record labels distributed by e-muzyka exceeded 100. Since 2021, it has been part of the Empik Group. By then, e-muzyka held copyrights to millions of musical tracks and serviced music services for marketing campaigns of brands such as Telewizja Polska, Payback, Crunchips, and Disney. It was responsible for major Polish digital download music services: Plus Music (formerly Muzodajnia; Plus), PlayTheMusic (Play), Sklep mp3/myBox (T-Mobile), GoOn (Vectra, Netia, Canal+, Toya), and Empik Music. It also integrated with a podcast service provider for Virtualo and established cooperation with labels Hypsteria Records, Art2 Music, and the VIP Bros group. In 2022-2023, the company changed its logo three times. In September 2022, e-muzyka launched the emuze.me platform for distribution and promotion of independent artists, which contributed to an increase in the number of served artists from 700 in 2022 to over 3,000 in 2026. In the first half of 2023, the Emunet tool was implemented, similar to emuze.me but intended for large licensors. In May 2023, company president Jan Ejsmont was appointed to the ZPAV board. Until the full acquisition of the joint-stock company by Empik, the e-muzyka group also included the limited liability company Empik Ventures, responsible for the concert platform Going. On the Warsaw Stock Exchange, e-muzyka operated under the ticker EMU until September 2023. On 17 May 2023, Empik acquired 100% of the company's shares and then removed it from the NewConnect market. On 5 September 2023, trading of e-muzyka shares ceased. The maximum share price of the music aggregator was 15.70 PLN (10 February 2023). Since the full acquisition by Empik, e-muzyka has consistently developed its activities based on a 360-degree strategy. The company also added 500 YouTube channels to its partner network, expanded its offer with physical distribution promotion in Empik stores, advertising campaigns for artists, and support in establishing cooperation with friendly radio stations.
