Overview
Eyetech Group Ltd is a British technology company founded in 1983 to provide commercial companies with automatic data collection systems. It had already been involved in supplying automatic toll collection systems used at the Dartford River Crossing and barcode-based tracking systems used by a UK national parcel service. The company was originally formed as a subsidiary of an international UK plc and became a standalone plc after a management buyout in 1985. Eyetech's core business has been bespoke software systems for the transport and distribution sector, particularly under Unix/AIX, including track-and-trace systems using barcodes that were adopted by the majority of UK parcel carriers. It also produced barcode decoders and industrial networked shop-floor data capture and access control systems. In 1993 Eyetech became a registered Amiga developer and built Amiga-related commercial systems in three areas: an integrated multimedia development and mass-delivery platform for its existing customers, rehoused Amiga hardware as a low-cost multitasking platform for shop-floor data collection and control in smaller industrial companies, and a karaoke platform using CD-ROM technology. During its years in the Amiga market, Eyetech manufactured accessories including a CD-ROM/IDE solution for the A1200, custom tower cases based on off-the-shelf PC towers with replacement backplane metalwork to match A1200 ports, a scan doubler/flicker fixer, and even attempted to introduce an extension to the Zorro bus standard. In 2000 Eyetech and Amiga, Inc. formed a partnership to produce hardware for the new AmigaOne platform. AmigaOne computers were introduced in 2002, first the AmigaOne SE followed by the AmigaOne XE and Micro-A1 models. Eyetech retired from the Amiga market in 2005 and subsequently sold its remaining Amiga business to Amiga Kit, which claims to have continued manufacturing and distributing Eyetech products to the Amiga market to the present day.
History
Eyetech Group Ltd was founded in 1983 to provide commercial companies with automatic data collection systems. Before that, the founders had already been involved in the provision of automatic toll collection systems used at the Dartford River Crossing, as well as many of the barcode-based tracking systems used by a UK national parcel service. The company was initially formed as a subsidiary of an international UK plc, and in 1985 it became a standalone plc following a management buyout. For much of its history, Eyetech focused on bespoke software systems for the transport and distribution sector under Unix/AIX. Its track-and-trace systems using barcodes were used by the majority of UK parcel carriers. It also produced barcode decoders and industrial networked shop-floor data capture and access control systems. Eyetech took an interest in the Amiga computer platform in 1993 and became a registered Amiga developer. It developed Amiga-related commercial systems in three main areas: as an integrated multimedia development and mass-delivery platform for its existing customer base with custom systems built around Amiga architecture; using rehoused Amiga hardware as a low-cost multitasking platform for shop-floor data collection and control applications in smaller industrial companies; and as a karaoke platform harnessing CD-ROM technology. During its years in the Amiga market, Eyetech manufactured several accessories for Amiga computers, including a CD-ROM/IDE solution for the A1200, custom tower cases based on off-the-shelf PC towers with replacement backplane metalwork to match A1200 ports riveted on, a scan doubler/flicker fixer, and it even attempted to introduce an extension to the Zorro bus standard. In 2000, Eyetech and Amiga, Inc. formed a partnership to produce hardware for the new AmigaOne platform.
