Overview
E wie einfach (styled E WIE EINFACH) is a German nationwide electricity and gas supplier headquartered in Cologne. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of E.ON Beteiligungen GmbH, itself a subsidiary of the E.ON SE energy group. The company was founded in February 2007 by E.ON as a discount energy brand and at the time was the only supplier offering both electricity and gas to private households across all of Germany. It markets itself as a fully digital energy provider, with tariffs, contract management and customer service delivered primarily through its website, customer portal and mobile app. The brand sells green electricity (Ökostrom) and natural gas to private households as well as small and medium-sized enterprises. Since 2021, all electricity customers have been supplied exclusively with green electricity. Tariffs are offered through the company's own website, call centres, sales cooperation partners, direct sales, price comparison portals and various online-based campaign formats. In the past, E wie einfach has offered bundle deals in cooperation with partners such as Sony, Netflix and Eis.de. E wie einfach positions itself as "the new E WIE EINFACH" — digital, mobile and tailored to the individual customer, with tariffs that adapt to the customer's consumption rather than the other way around. The company has received numerous awards for service, price-performance, sustainability and digital offerings, including recognition from the F.A.Z. Institute, SZ Institute, Focus Money, DIE WELT, Tagesspiegel and ntv. It has also been certified by TÜV NORD for its green electricity products. Beyond energy supply, the brand maintains a visible public profile through its E wie einfach E-Sports team, which competes in the League of Legends Prime League, and through environmental and community projects such as #artfortrees, which uses artist-designed tree watering bags to protect urban trees. The company has also faced criticism, including a controversial 2012 advertising spot and a 2018 fine from the German Federal Network Agency for unauthorised advertising calls.
History
E wie einfach was founded in February 2007 by the E.ON energy group as a discount energy subsidiary headquartered in Cologne. At the time of its founding, it was the only supplier in Germany offering both electricity and gas to private households on a nationwide basis. The company was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of E.ON Beteiligungen GmbH, which is itself a subsidiary of E.ON SE. From the outset, E wie einfach marketed its electricity and gas tariffs through multiple channels: its own website, call centres, various sales cooperation partners, direct sales, price comparison portals and online-based campaign formats. Over the years, the company offered bundle deals in cooperation with other providers, including Sony, Netflix and Eis.de. In February and March 2012, E wie einfach aired a series of television commercials, one of which — titled 'Einschlafen' ('Falling Asleep') — depicted a couple lying in bed. When the woman says she cannot sleep, the man gives her a headbutt, followed by an off-screen voice saying 'Ist doch ganz einfach!' ('It's quite simple!'). The advertisement drew widespread criticism for allegedly glorifying violence in relationships and the suppression of women, although it also received positive feedback and many internet users expressed incomprehension at the criticism. In 2018, the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) imposed a fine of 140,000 euros on E wie einfach GmbH for unauthorised advertising calls. The penalty followed massive consumer complaints that the company had advertised electricity and gas contracts by telephone nationwide without effective consent for advertising. In early 2021, E wie einfach took over the E-Sports team OP innogy, originally founded by Innogy, and began competing under the name E wie einfach E-Sports in the League of Legends Division 1 of the Prime League. The team achieved a notable result in 2025, finishing as vice-champion of the Winter Split and qualifying for the EMEA Masters for the first time, where they defeated the Slovak team NightBirds 2:0 in the group stage before exiting after a loss to eventual tournament winner Los Ratones. Also in 2021, the company launched the #artfortrees project. In cooperation with the Urban Shit Gallery in Hamburg, street artists designed tree watering bags to protect trees from drought in summer. Together with the 'Gießkannheld:innen' initiative, street trees in Essen were equipped with watering bags. In July 2022, the campaign was implemented in Hamburg with the Live to Love Germany foundation. In 2023, the designed tree watering bags were presented at the Bürgerfest for German Unity Day in Hamburg as part of the official celebrations' sustainability mile. In 2024, the bags were shown at the San Hejmo Festival and subsequently handed over to the municipality of Weeze. E wie einfach has also supported beekeepers across Germany through the startup Hektar Nektar, funding projects in Bremen, Duisburg and Nuremberg, and in 2022 established 50,000 bees in Bergisch Gladbach. In 2025, after the band Culcha Candela rudely declined a request, sparking a shitstorm, E wie einfach organised a surprise birthday party for the disappointed fan, featuring Philipp Dittberner and the music duo HE/RO. Since 2021, E wie einfach has supplied all electricity customers exclusively with green electricity. The company has received numerous awards, including 'Excellent Sustainability' from the F.A.Z. Institute (2025), TÜV NORD certification 'Tested Green Electricity' for all electricity products (2025), 'Price Champions' from DIE WELT (2026), 'Very High Contract Transparency' from Tagesspiegel (2026), 'Best Service' from the F.A.Z. Institute (2026), 'Best Customer Hotline' from Focus Money (2025), 'Champions in Customer Care' from the F.A.Z. Institute (2025), 'Best App – Highest Added Value' from the SZ Institute (2026) and the 'German App Award 2026' from ntv (2026).
