Overview
EarthMedic/EarthNurse Foundation for Planetary Health is a global non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the interconnected crises of climate change and human health. Founded by Dr. Hospedales after his retirement as the inaugural director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in 2019, the organization emerged from a recognition that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for a new approach to planetary health. With headquarters in Trinidad and Tobago and a presence in England, UK, EarthMedic and EarthNurse operate with a global scope but maintain a specialized focus on climate-vulnerable regions, primarily the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The foundation's mission is to provide a nurturing community for nurses, doctors, and individuals concerned about the climate and health crisis, offering a secure platform for discussion, connection, resource sharing, and action. It pursues this through public-private-people-planet (PPPP) partnerships and a range of educational offerings, including courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences. The organization also produces research and publications, such as the first comprehensive research agenda for climate action in the Caribbean, and engages in advocacy through newspaper articles and other media. By promoting the health of people and the planet together, EarthMedic/EarthNurse Foundation seeks to empower a global health workforce to take decisive action for personal, societal, and planetary well-being.
History
EarthMedic/EarthNurse Foundation for Planetary Health was established by Dr. Hospedales following his retirement in 2019 as the inaugural director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). With 30 years of experience in global public health, including facing public health emergencies, epidemics, disasters, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Dr. Hospedales felt impelled to work on planetary health. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for a new beginning and demonstrating widespread willingness to work for the planet's benefit. Dr. Hospedales founded EarthMedic as a new NGO to raise urgent attention to and resources for action to improve planetary health, working with an informed and empowered health workforce globally, and through public-private-people-planet (PPPP) partnerships. The organization is a not-for-profit with global scope, special focus on climate-vulnerable regions, anchored in the Caribbean small island developing states (SIDS), and based in Trinidad and Tobago and England, UK. Since its founding, EarthMedic and EarthNurse have engaged in various activities, including the development of the first comprehensive research agenda for climate action in the Caribbean, titled 'A Public, Private, People's and Planetary Health Agenda.' They offer courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences, and publish articles on topics such as Hurricane Beryl, plastics and pesticides, ocean health, and climate change and mental health. The foundation collaborates with partners and associates to advance its mission.
