Overview
Easley Winery is a family-owned and operated winery in downtown Indianapolis that has been making award-winning wines since 1974, using grapes from vineyards in Indiana, Michigan, New York, and other regions of the USA. It began as the dream of Jack and Joan Easley, who made wine as a hobby in their Indianapolis basement in the late 1960s and helped change Indiana law to allow wineries in 1974. The winery offers seated wine tasting flights, a wine garden, and a range of dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet, seasonal, and sparkling wines, with bottles available at grocery, convenience, and liquor stores throughout the Midwest and through select online retailers.
History
Easley Winery began as the dream and vision of Jack and Joan Easley in the late 1960s. Making wines as a hobby in their basement in Indianapolis, Jack and Joan dreamed of growing grapes and making wine in Indiana. Jack was an attorney and Joan owned her own market research business. After learning it was illegal to make and sell wine in Indiana, they invested in a small vineyard in southern Michigan. The long drives on poor roads quickly became old, and Jack and Joan decided to see if the Indiana prohibition laws could be changed. In 1971, a group of about 12 people began meeting regularly to plan how to change Indiana's laws. The group adopted the name Indiana Wine Growers Guild and often met in the living room of Jack and Joan's house. Being a lawyer, Jack incorporated the Indiana Wine Growers Guild with the Secretary of State of Indiana. Finally, in 1974, Indiana law was changed to allow wineries. Jack and Joan purchased the former Fertig Ice Cream factory in downtown Indianapolis and had their first grape crush of their Cape Sandy, IN vineyards in the fall of 1974. This facility is still in its original location in downtown Indy's Cole Noble Commercial Arts District. Easley Winery is a family-owned and operated winery in the heart of downtown Indianapolis that has been making award-winning wines since 1974, using grapes from vineyards in Indiana, Michigan, New York, and other regions of the USA. Its winemaking team has been together for over a decade, and the winery collaborates with skilled grape growers across the Midwest, starting with its foundational Cape Sandy vineyards in Indiana and expanding to source grapes from Jennings County in Indiana, Berrien County in Michigan, and the Finger Lakes region of New York.
