Overview
Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O) is a premier lifestyle property developer listed on Bursa Malaysia, with the E&O name associated with creating placemaking addresses of enduring value. Its portfolio spans hospitality through to luxury living, headlined by Penang's Eastern & Oriental Hotel. E&O's activities are driven by four main growth engines in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor's Iskandar Malaysia and Central London. In Kuala Lumpur it is known for properties such as The Mews, St Mary Residences, Dua Residency, Idamansara and Seventy Damansara, with Conlay and The Peak in development. In Penang it is behind Seri Tanjung Pinang, a 240-acre masterplanned seafront development launched in 2005, and the newer Andaman development whose maiden project The Meg was previewed in December 2021. In Johor, Avira is a residential enclave within Bandar Medini Iskandar.
History
The E&O timeline traces the heritage of the Eastern & Oriental Hotel: in 1885 Sarkies Brother established the Oriental Hotel at 10, Farquhar Street by buying over the Hotel de l'Europe; in 1889 it was renamed the Eastern & Oriental Hotel. In 1933 it was subsumed under Raffles Hotel Ltd, and in 1938 acquired by Runnymede Hotel Ltd. In 1949 it was restored to its pre-war standard, and in 1951 ownership passed to a prominent local Chinese family, the Choongs, operating under Eastern & Oriental Hotel (1951) Limited. In 1965 the Chan family purchased the E&O from the Choongs and managed it until 1994. In 1994 a local property consortium led by Dato' Seri Terry Tham Ka Hon bought a controlling stake and the business name was changed to Eastern & Oriental Berhad. The hotel closed in March 1996 for major restoration and refurbishment. Seri Tanjung Pinang reclamation work started in 1997 by UEM Group and was abandoned the same year; in 1999 Kencana TGI took over and resumed the reclamation. Today E&O is described as a premier lifestyle property developer listed on Bursa Malaysia, with activities driven by four main growth engines in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor's Iskandar Malaysia and Central London.
