Overview
Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative is an electric cooperative whose mission is "providing our members with safe, reliable energy solutions and exceptional service." It was formed in 1987 by the union of two electric cooperatives — Eastern Illinois Power Cooperative and Illini Electric Cooperative — each of which had served their members since 1938. The combined cooperative provides more reliable and cost-effective power solutions. It is governed by a nine-member elected board of directors who are themselves members of the cooperative, and it exists to serve the "last-mile" areas of rural, east central Illinois.
History
Eastern Illini Electric Cooperative was formed in 1987 by the union of two electric cooperatives: Eastern Illinois Power Cooperative and Illini Electric Cooperative, each of which had served their members since 1938. Together they formed a larger cooperative that provides more reliable and cost-effective power solutions. The cooperative traces its purpose to the late 1930s, when, as part of FDR's New Deal, the Rural Electrification Act (REA) provided support so residents of rural America could form their own electric companies. It exists because no other entity was willing to provide electric service to the "last-mile" areas of rural, east central Illinois, and it is governed by a nine-member elected board of directors who are members of the cooperative.
