Overview
EBS Edizioni, formally EBS Editoriale Bortolazzi Stei, is an Italian printing and publishing company based in San Giovanni Lupatoto, near Verona. Founded in 1953 by Giuseppe Bortolazzi and Norma Fiorio as Tipografia La Commerciale, the firm evolved from a small local print shop into an internationally recognized specialist in high-quality book printing, particularly photographic and illustrated books. The company is family-owned and now managed by the third generation of the Bortolazzi family. It operates through three main departments: prepress, high-quality offset printing, and a binding factory that includes a unique 'out of format' department for handcrafted, large-format books. EBS has branches in the United Kingdom and the United States and serves publishers worldwide. Its reputation is built on color management, craftsmanship, and a long tradition of printing works by renowned artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andy Warhol, Jacques Lowe, and Wim Wenders. The company emphasizes a manual quality control system and a strong 'Made in Italy' identity.
History
EBS Edizioni traces its origins to 1953, when Giuseppe Bortolazzi and his wife Norma Fiorio founded Tipografia La Commerciale in San Giovanni Lupatoto, a small town south of Verona, Italy. The following year, the family moved to a new home and relocated the printing business, which had already expanded substantially. This period marked the beginning of book and catalogue printing, initially limited to text or black-and-white reproductions. In 1971, Fabio, the elder son, completed high school and took over the business, defining its definitive vocation for printing books with text and illustrations. Under his leadership, hot typesetting was supplemented by one of the first phototypesetting systems delivered in Europe, and typographic printing was gradually replaced by offset printing. The zinc clichés of the first publications gave way to single, two- and four-colour photolithography equipment, which remains the basis for modern production. In 1980, a new company configuration heralded further development through to the new millennium. The second generation, combined with a vocation for quality and a focus on innovation, enabled the group to consolidate its expanding traditions within the international industrial scenario. A hallmark of this period was the printing of photographic books by artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andy Warhol, Jacques Lowe, and Wim Wenders. Today, the Bortolazzi family business is in the hands of the third generation. It has grown into a solid industrial reality on a national and international scale, with branches in Great Britain and the United States. The company continues to operate from its headquarters in San Giovanni Lupatoto, emphasizing a complete, internally developed manual quality control system that covers all workflows, personnel, and departments, from production to administration and finance. EBS remains dedicated to high-quality printing and binding, with a special focus on photographic and art books, and maintains a strong 'Made in Italy' identity.
