Overview
ECA Group was a French industrial group founded in 1936 by Marcel Gianoli and Paul Rozycki as Établissements de Constructions Aéronautiques (ECA). Originally an aeronautics company, it evolved into a specialist in robotics and automated systems designed to operate in hostile environments, particularly underwater. The company was headquartered in Toulon, France, and was listed on the Paris Stock Exchange before being delisted on 10 August 2023. In 2022, ECA Group merged with iXblue to form Exail, a subsidiary of Exail Technologies (formerly Groupe Gorgé). ECA Group's legacy includes pioneering underwater mine countermeasure robots such as the PAP (Poisson Autopropulsé Piloté), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) used in defense, maritime, and civil applications. Its technologies were deployed in high-profile missions including the exploration of the Titanic. Today, the ECA Group brand is no longer active as a standalone entity, but its expertise continues within Exail, which employs over 2,200 people across some 30 sites worldwide and serves customers in over 80 countries.
History
ECA was founded in 1936 in Meudon, France, by Marcel Gianoli, an aeronautical engineer, and Paul Rozycki, who handled management and commercial relations. The company was initially named Établissements de Constructions Aéronautiques (ECA) and focused on aeronautics, filing numerous patents on flight control and steering systems between 1936 and 1950. During this period, ECA developed components such as the 'Autoptère' control surface and specialized in aerial targets, including towed and remotely controlled targets for pilot training. By the late 1950s, ECA expanded into electronics, automation, and computing, manufacturing complex aluminum forged parts for clients like Dassault, Matra, and Messier-Bugatti. The company also produced precursor missile devices (ECA 27, ECA 20, ECA 57). In the late 1960s, ECA entered underwater robotics, initially through a contract to develop a 1/10th scale model of a nuclear submarine for hydrodynamic testing. In 1970, ECA created the PAP (Poisson Autopropulsé Piloté), the world's first underwater mine disposal robot, with the PAP-104 model. This led to the establishment of ECA's headquarters in Toulon in 1975. The PAP robots became a reference in mine countermeasures and were a major export success for 30 years. Other underwater products followed, including the EPAULARD, the world's first operational deep-water autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) capable of reaching 6,000 meters, designed in 1979 for IFREMER. ECA's equipment participated in significant missions such as the exploration of the Titanic. By the late 1980s, ECA had shifted focus from aeronautics to robotics, particularly in civil and military underwater applications. The company was acquired by Groupe Gorgé. In 2022, ECA Group merged with iXblue to form Exail, a subsidiary of Exail Technologies. ECA Group was delisted on 10 August 2023.
