Overview

ECC Ediciones was a Spanish comic-book publisher based in Barcelona, founded in 2011 as part of El Catálogo del Cómic. It operated in Spain and in the Spanish-speaking countries of South America. The company was primarily dedicated to publishing the comics of DC Entertainment — DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD — although it also published comics from other American, Franco-Belgian and Japanese manga publishers. El Catálogo del Cómic, founded in 1995, built its foundations on what is today its commercial division: the Cosmic bookstore and the online store tiendascosmic.net. Over the years it expanded its business areas and created departments for sales, distribution, editorial services, IT and more, working for large companies such as Grupo Planeta (Spain), Sony (United States), Giochi Preziosi (Italy) and Cospa (Japan). In August 2011, El Catálogo del Cómic announced the acquisition of the publishing rights to DC Entertainment, which until then had been held by Planeta DeAgostini. El Catálogo del Cómic already had a close relationship with the publishing of these comics, working as a packager doing translation, writing, layout and design tasks, but from 1 January 2012 it took charge of the entire editorial process, creating for the occasion a new company called simply ECC. ECC's publishing debut coincided with the launch of the New DC Universe (also known as The New 52) and Before Watchmen. However, before reaching such commercial material, ECC had to close the collections started by Planeta DeAgostini, respecting the characteristics of those products (format, numbering, price, etc.). Little by little, ECC began to organise its publishing according to its own approach: the regular series of Batman, Green Lantern, Justice League and Superman came out monthly in 48-page staple-bound format, while others (Aquaman, Flash, Wonder Woman) did so in quarterly 96-page volumes. In some cases, the publisher tried volumes collecting a complete story with no fixed periodicity (Animal Man, Red Hood and the Outlaws). At the end of January 2025, ECC Ediciones was declared insolvent (concurso de acreedores) and announced it would stop serving orders. The DC Comics licence was incorporated into the catalogue of Editorial Panini and the Skybound Entertainment series went to Planeta, with the rest absorbed by different publishers or left free on the market.
