Overview

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment was an American independent distributor of filmed entertainment. Its business covered the acquisition, packaging, licensing, and release of feature films, scripted and unscripted television series, documentaries, and children's programming. The company served the home-video market through DVD and Blu-ray releases and also participated in digital and television distribution in the United States and internationally. The business began in 1995 as Platinum Disc Corporation, initially concentrating on inexpensive DVD editions of low-budget and public-domain films. In February 2004, Echo Bridge Entertainment was established at the American Film Market after acquiring the libraries of CineTel Films and PM Entertainment. Echo Bridge subsequently announced the acquisition of the Green Communications library. Platinum Disc Corporation and Echo Bridge Entertainment merged in July 2005, creating Echo Bridge Home Entertainment as the principal home-entertainment operation. The Echo Bridge name and visual identity were inspired by the real Echo Bridge in Newton, Massachusetts. The company expanded from budget physical-media publishing into a larger library-distribution business. In April 2008, it acquired Alliance Atlantis's international operations, including television distribution rights to much of the Alliance Atlantis library, in a transaction involving Goldman Sachs. The CSI franchise was excluded and remained with CBS. This acquisition substantially increased Echo Bridge's catalog and international reach. Later, the company entered a distribution arrangement with Filmyard Holdings, the owner of Miramax, under which Echo Bridge released 251 films from the Miramax catalog beginning in 2011. The arrangement placed Echo Bridge alongside Lionsgate and StudioCanal, which handled other parts of the Miramax library. Echo Bridge also controlled or distributed programming associated with family and children's entertainment. Its broader portfolio was described as containing more than 11,000 titles after the Alliance Atlantis transaction and subsequent partnerships, including the television property Degrassi: The Next Generation, produced in association with Epitome Pictures and DHX Media. In November 2014, DHX Media acquired Echo Bridge's family library, separating those assets from the company's remaining film and television holdings. The Miramax arrangement ended in 2014. Echo Bridge's Miramax releases went out of print after the rights expired, and references to those releases were removed from the company's website. Lionsgate later expanded its Miramax arrangement to include the 251 titles previously handled by Echo Bridge; in 2020, Paramount Home Entertainment took on those titles under an expanded Miramax deal. In January 2017, filmmaker and producer Steven Paul acquired Echo Bridge's non-family assets. The acquired operation was renamed Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp. It later became dormant and was folded into SP Distribution in 2021. Digital distribution rights to the Echo Bridge, PM Entertainment, and Alliance Atlantis libraries were subsequently acquired by FilmRise, a New York-based distributor and streaming company. By 2025, Shout! Studios had acquired the FilmRise library, including the Echo Bridge library. Thus, Echo Bridge Home Entertainment no longer operates as an independent active distributor, although portions of its former catalog continue to circulate through successor rights holders and digital platforms.

History

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment developed from a low-cost DVD publisher into a substantial independent library distributor. Its predecessor, Platinum Disc Corporation, began operations in 1995 by issuing DVDs of low-budget and public-domain films. This initial business model emphasized inexpensive catalog exploitation rather than the production of original theatrical content. The company later adopted the Echo Bridge identity, a name derived from the landmark Echo Bridge in Newton, Massachusetts. Echo Bridge Entertainment was formed at the American Film Market in February 2004. Its launch was associated with acquisitions of the film libraries of CineTel Films and PM Entertainment, giving the new company a larger base of action, genre, and other commercial film properties. In September of that year, Echo Bridge announced plans to acquire the Green Communications library. Platinum Disc Corporation and Echo Bridge Entertainment merged in July 2005, creating Echo Bridge Home Entertainment and combining physical home-video expertise with a broader rights portfolio. A major expansion occurred in April 2008, when Echo Bridge acquired Alliance Atlantis's international operations, including television distribution rights to the Alliance Atlantis library. The transaction was made from Goldman Sachs and excluded the CSI franchise, whose rights remained with CBS. The acquisition gave Echo Bridge a far larger international and television-distribution footprint and helped transform it from a budget-DVD company into a multi-platform catalog business. In 2011, Echo Bridge entered a deal with Filmyard Holdings, then the owner of Miramax, to distribute 251 films from the Miramax catalog. Other portions of the Miramax library were assigned to Lionsgate and StudioCanal. Echo Bridge's Miramax releases expanded the company's profile in home entertainment, but the arrangement was not permanent. On March 17, 2014, following the loss of the rights, Echo Bridge's Miramax releases went out of print and references to them were removed from its website. Lionsgate later assumed responsibility for those 251 films under an expanded Miramax agreement, and Paramount Home Entertainment subsequently included them in its own expanded Miramax arrangement in 2020. The company also held a significant family and children's catalog. Its combined portfolio was described as exceeding 11,000 titles and included Degrassi: The Next Generation, produced with Epitome Pictures and DHX Media. In November 2014, DHX Media acquired the family library, reducing Echo Bridge's remaining business to non-family assets and related distribution rights. In January 2017, Steven Paul purchased those non-family assets. The operation was renamed Echo Bridge Acquisition Corp., later became dormant, and was folded into SP Distribution in 2021. FilmRise subsequently obtained digital distribution rights to the Echo Bridge, PM Entertainment, and Alliance Atlantis libraries. By 2025, Shout! Studios had acquired the FilmRise library, including the Echo Bridge material. The brand is therefore defunct as an operating company, while its former catalogs remain commercially relevant through later rights owners and distributors.

    DVD catalog releases

DVD publishing was the foundation of the business. Platinum Disc Corporation initially focused on low-budget and public-domain films, while the later Echo Bridge operation expanded into acquired studio, independent-film, television, documentary, and children's catalogs. The DVD business allowed the company to monetize large libraries through comparatively accessible retail and rental releases.

    Blu-ray releases

Blu-ray releases formed part of Echo Bridge's physical home-entertainment offering as the market moved beyond standard DVD. These releases extended the company's catalog-distribution model into higher-definition packaged media, although the available reference material does not identify a complete list of individual Blu-ray lines or titles.

    Miramax catalog releases

Through its 2011 agreement with Filmyard Holdings, Echo Bridge released 251 films from the Miramax catalog. The rights later moved to other distributors, and the Echo Bridge releases went out of print after the arrangement ended.
