Overview
Echter Verlag is a specialist publisher for religion, theology, spirituality, life guidance, pastoral care, religious poetry, and Franconian regional literature. It was founded in 1900 as Echter Würzburg, Fränkische Gesellschaftsdruckerei und Verlag, with the original goal of publishing the Catholic newspaper 'Fränkisches Volksblatt'. The company has a long history, including challenges during the Nazi era and closure in 1942, but was re-licensed in 1946. It is known for the 'Echter Bibel' commentary series, which began in 1947 and was continued as the 'Neue Echter Bibel' in 1975.
History
Echter Verlag was founded on January 25, 1900, when 'Echter Würzburg, Fränkische Gesellschaftsdruckerei und Verlag' was entered in the commercial register. The original goal was to publish the Catholic newspaper 'Fränkisches Volksblatt', which had existed since 1868. In 1915, the company moved to the Echterhaus in Juliuspromenade. During the Nazi era, the newspaper had to defend itself against the new rulers, and by January 1938, Echter had no influence on the newspaper. On August 28, 1942, the book publishing house was temporarily ended due to accusations of printing without paper permission. After the war, on January 10, 1946, the Echter Verlag received a license from the American military government to resume publishing. In 1947, the 'Echter Bibel' commentary series appeared, which is still highly regarded among experts; it was continued in 1975 with the 'Neue Echter Bibel'. In the late 1950s, Adalbert Seipolt became a successful author for Echter Verlag, and his humorous stories have sold over a million copies to date.
