Overview

Ecological Christian Organisation (ECO), also known as Eco Uganda, is an indigenous Ugandan non-governmental organisation founded in 2005 and registered with the Uganda NGO Board. It works to advance sustainable livelihoods, ecological justice, and inclusive development for marginalised and vulnerable communities across Uganda. ECO's work is rooted in the belief that people and nature are deeply interconnected, and that local communities are the primary custodians of land, water, and biodiversity. The organisation designs and delivers community-led solutions that protect nature, strengthen livelihoods, and advance climate and ecological justice. Its programmes focus on three broad areas: protecting nature through the restoration of degraded forests and ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and promoting nature-based solutions that strengthen climate resilience; empowering communities by working with farmers, fisherfolk, pastoralists, refugees, women, and youth to build sustainable livelihoods rooted in local knowledge, dignity, and social justice; and influencing systems by promoting inclusive governance, accountability, and evidence-based policies that protect environmental rights and ensure fair access to land and natural resources. ECO adopts an integrated and holistic approach to sustainable development, recognising the interlinkages between environmental conservation, livelihoods, food security, climate change, and social justice. The organisation places strong emphasis on community leadership and participatory processes, ensuring that communities are actively involved in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of interventions. It values indigenous knowledge systems and promotes locally appropriate solutions that strengthen resilience while safeguarding ecological integrity. Guided by core values of ecological stewardship, community empowerment, and social and environmental justice, ECO works across Uganda with a focus on marginalised, under-served, and vulnerable communities. The organisation is active in fundraising and governance, including periodic calls for applications to join its Board of Directors.

History

Ecological Christian Organisation (ECO) was founded in 2005 as an indigenous Ugandan non-governmental organisation. It registered with the Uganda NGO Board and has operated in Uganda since then. The organisation was established on the understanding that human wellbeing and environmental sustainability are inseparable, and that long-term development depends on healthy ecosystems and responsible natural resource use. From its early years, ECO adopted an integrated and holistic approach to sustainable development, recognising the complex interlinkages between environmental conservation, livelihoods, food security, climate change, and social justice. It placed strong emphasis on community leadership and participatory processes, ensuring that communities are actively involved in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of interventions. The organisation also values indigenous knowledge systems and promotes locally appropriate solutions that strengthen resilience while safeguarding ecological integrity. Over the years, ECO has worked with farmers, fisherfolk, pastoralists, refugees, women, and youth to build sustainable livelihoods rooted in local knowledge, dignity, and social justice. Its programmes have addressed climate and ecological justice, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, and inclusive environmental governance. The organisation has also promoted inclusive governance, accountability, and evidence-based policies that protect environmental rights and ensure fair access to land and natural resources. As of its official website, ECO continues to operate across Uganda, describing itself as leading community-driven solutions for climate and ecological justice.
