Overview

EcoTv was an Italian television network distributed via satellite and over the web. It was a satellite channel on the Sky platform, launched in 2006 and founded and directed by the journalist Pino Gagliardi. Its programming dealt mainly with ecology, civil rights, peace, solidarity and social justice, and it positioned itself as a voice for independent culture and grassroots activism. The channel was published by EcoNetwork s.r.l. and was reachable on channel 906 of the Sky platform. It was visible across Europe and in the northern Mediterranean countries via the Hot Bird 13A satellite (transponder 125, horizontal polarization, frequency 11013, symbol rate 27500, FEC 3/4). EcoTv acted as an official partner or official broadcaster for a number of events, including the National Conference on Climate Change at the FAO in Rome in September 2007, Beppe Grillo's V-Day, the 2007 Rome Gay Pride, EuroPride 2007 in Madrid, Cinambiente 2007, the TrailerFilmFest in Catania, Vento di Terre in Foggia, MareAmico 2007, the MEI (Meeting Etichette Indipendenti) in Faenza, and CinemAbili in Genova. On 23 February 2008 it broadcast live Il giorno del rifiuto, an initiative organized by the "Amici di Beppe Grillo" meet-up to give voice to citizens protesting the waste-management crisis in Naples and other Campanian municipalities. On 25 April 2008 it exclusively broadcast the V2-Day, Beppe Grillo's mobilization day in Turin's Piazza San Carlo, which launched signature collections for three referendums. Its schedule included programmes dedicated to independent music, theatre and cinema, such as Nonsoloemtivi (hosted by Leyla Pafumi), Teatro InStabile (curated by Giulia Spiniello) and Sviste (curated by Mario Mazzarotto). The channel is no longer active.

History

EcoTv was an Italian television network distributed via satellite and over the web. It was a satellite channel on the Sky platform, launched in 2006. It was founded and directed by the journalist Pino Gagliardi and dealt mainly with ecology, civil rights, peace, solidarity and social justice. EcoTv was an official partner of the National Conference on Climate Change at the FAO held in Rome in September 2007, of Beppe Grillo's V-Day, of the Rome Gay Pride held in 2007, and was the official television of EuroPride 2007 in Madrid, of Cinambiente 2007, of the TrailerFilmFest in Catania, of Vento di Terre in Foggia, of MareAmico 2007, of the MEI (Meeting Etichette Indipendenti) in Faenza, and of CinemAbili held in Genova. On 23 February 2008 the broadcaster aired live Il giorno del rifiuto, the initiative organized by the "Amici di Beppe Grillo" meet-up to give voice to citizens' protest against the extreme degradation in Naples and many other Campanian municipalities caused by a failed waste-management policy. Alongside Beppe Grillo, this great "marathon of refuse" saw the participation of Franca Rame, Edoardo Bennato, Enzo Gragnaniello and many other artists. On 25 April 2008 EcoTv exclusively broadcast the V2-Day, the mobilization day promoted by the Genoese comedian Beppe Grillo who, in Piazza San Carlo in Turin and in connection with meet-ups in numerous other Italian squares, launched the signature collection for three referendums on the abolition of the Order of Journalists, the abolition of public funding for publishing, and the abolition of the Gasparri law. In its schedule, EcoTv showed a commitment to a "finally free" culture. From the beginning of its programming the channel gave space to lesser-seen art forms and to independent artists not always present on generalist channels. In this sense the programmes included Nonsoloemtivi (hosted by Leyla Pafumi), created to give voice and space to all artists who still believe in music to the point of self-producing or creating independent labels to spread their music without pressure from the global record industry; Teatro InStabile (curated by Giulia Spiniello), a format dedicated to prose theatre offering viewers a rich archive of theatrical performances presented in full in prime time; and Sviste (curated by Mario Mazzarotto), created to give voice to Italian film authors and directors whose works not everyone had the opportunity to know. EcoTv, published by EcoNetwork s.r.l., was reachable on channel 906 of the Sky platform. It was visible throughout Europe and in the northern Mediterranean countries via the following coordinates: Satellite Hot Bird 13A, transponder 125, horizontal polarization, frequency 11013, symbol rate 27500, FEC 3/4. The channel is no longer active.
