Overview

E.DIS AG is a regional public utilities company headquartered in Fürstenwalde/Spree in the German state of Brandenburg. Its core business is the operation of regional and municipal electricity and gas networks across an area of roughly 36,000 square kilometres stretching from the Baltic coast to the Spreewald. It is described as the largest stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft) in the state of Brandenburg. The company is majority-owned by E.ON Beteiligungen GmbH with 65.5% of the shares; a further 33.0% is held by municipal bodies, and the Swedish E.ON Sverige Aktiebolag holds 1.5%. The company was founded in 1999 through the merger of the predecessor utilities EMO Neubrandenburg, HEVAG Rostock, MEVAG Potsdam and OSE Fürstenwalde, initially trading as e.dis Energie Nord AG. It was renamed E.DIS Aktiengesellschaft in 2002 and then E.ON edis AG in 2005. Regulatory requirements from the legislator and the Bundesnetzagentur to separate network operation from energy sales led to the renaming back to E.DIS AG effective 1 July 2013. In that context, E.DIS Netz GmbH was spun off on 3 July 2017, and E.DIS AG has since acted as a holding company for E.DIS Netz GmbH and other subsidiaries. The E.DIS Group remains responsible for the electricity and gas networks as well as other business fields, but not for the sale of electricity and gas. Beyond the company headquarters, significant central functions are located in Potsdam and Demmin, and there are three regional divisions with 30 locations for direct on-site customer support. The group operates electricity networks in large parts of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and gas networks in parts of Brandenburg and eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It also offers street lighting, data processing (DV) services, heat supply and telecommunications. The group holds numerous participations in regional and municipal energy companies, including full ownership of e.dis Netz GmbH, e.discom Telekommunikation GmbH, e.distherm Wärmedienstleistungen GmbH, e.disnatur Erneuerbare Energien GmbH, E.ON edis Contracting GmbH, E.DIS energia Sp. z o.o. in Warsaw, Netz- und Wartungsservice (NWS) GmbH, BMV Energie Beteiligungs GmbH and e.dialog Netz GmbH, as well as minority stakes in many Stadtwerke and network companies.

History

E.DIS AG was founded in 1999 through the merger of the predecessor companies EMO Neubrandenburg, HEVAG Rostock, MEVAG Potsdam and OSE Fürstenwalde as a regional energy supplier. The company initially operated under the name e.dis Energie Nord AG. In 2002 it changed its name to E.DIS Aktiengesellschaft, and in 2005 it was renamed E.ON edis AG. Requirements from the legislator and the Bundesnetzagentur that network operation and energy sales must be clearly separated from one another prompted the renaming to E.DIS AG effective 1 July 2013. In this context, E.DIS Netz GmbH was spun off on 3 July 2017. Since then, E.DIS AG has acted as a holding company for E.DIS Netz GmbH as well as for other subsidiaries. The E.DIS Group remains responsible for the electricity and gas network and for other business fields, but not for the sale of electricity and gas.
