Overview

Edition Erdmann is a German publishing house founded in 1956 by Horst Erdmann under the name Verlag für Internationalen Kulturaustausch (Publisher for International Cultural Exchange) in Berlin. It later moved to Bad Herrenalb in the Black Forest and then to Tübingen in 1967, where it operated as Horst Erdmann Verlag für Internationalen Kulturaustausch. The publisher's stated mission was to bring peoples closer together through literature, reduce prejudices, broaden readers' horizons in a global sense, and provide reliable, vivid information about the world beyond Germany, while also giving foreign peoples knowledge of contemporary German literature. Since its founding, Edition Erdmann has published over 150 historical travel accounts, which it claims constitutes the largest collection of old travel reports in the German-speaking world. From 1976 to 1986, it published the ten-volume Bibliothek arabischer Klassiker (Library of Arabic Classics). In 1981, the publishing house was acquired as an imprint by the Stuttgart-based K. Thienemanns Verlag. In 2001, it was further acquired by the Swedish Bonnier Group and renamed Erdmann Verlag. In 2003, publisher Hansjörg Weitbrecht re-founded Edition Erdmann GmbH – Verlag und Medienagentur as an independent company based in Lenningen, together with editor Gudrun Kolb-Rothermel. In January 2008, the Wiesbaden-based marixverlag, owned by publisher Lothar Wekel, acquired Edition Erdmann. Today, Edition Erdmann is part of Verlagshaus Römerweg, where travel accounts from the Horst Erdmann Verlag era continue to be offered, now under the series title Die 100 bedeutendsten Entdecker (The 100 Most Important Explorers). The publisher remains active in the German book market, specializing in historical travel literature and cultural exchange through literature.

History

Edition Erdmann was founded in 1956 by Horst Erdmann as Verlag für Internationalen Kulturaustausch (Publisher for International Cultural Exchange) in Berlin. The publishing house soon moved to Bad Herrenalb in the Black Forest. Under the name Horst Erdmann Verlag für Internationalen Kulturaustausch, it moved again in 1967 to Tübingen. At that time, it stated its programmatic orientation: "Through the medium of literature to bring peoples closer to one another and to reduce prejudices, [...] to broaden the horizon in a global sense and to convey to readers reliable, vivid information about how things really look out there," as well as "to give distant peoples a knowledge of the German present and its literature." In 1981, the publishing house was acquired as an imprint by the Stuttgart-based K. Thienemanns Verlag. In 2001, it was further acquired by the Swedish Bonnier Group and renamed Erdmann Verlag. In 2003, publisher Hansjörg Weitbrecht re-founded Edition Erdmann GmbH – Verlag und Medienagentur as a publishing house with headquarters in Lenningen. Together with editor Gudrun Kolb-Rothermel, Weitbrecht built an independent company. In January 2008, the Wiesbaden-based marixverlag, owned by publisher Lothar Wekel, acquired Edition Erdmann. Meanwhile, Edition Erdmann is located at Verlagshaus Römerweg, where in particular the travel accounts from the time of Horst Erdmann Verlag continue to be offered, now under the series title Die 100 bedeutendsten Entdecker. According to its own statements, this represents the largest collection of old travel reports in the German-speaking world.
